Also during there run in the 3rd we had a 2 on 1 on the half back flank and instead of attacking the contest he peeled off, the ball bounced straight in to the arms of the Essendon player and they went forward and kicked a goal.
To be fair, if ever there's a time to corral inside teh defensive 50, that's got to be it. Isolate the player, don't let him move, and the moment he commits in a direction, take him for a holding the ball call. If the player decides to take the shot, fine, from that angle it's more likely to be out on the full than a goal, and it probably results in the Saints gaining the ball.
That said, I don't think there's actually ever a moment where it's appropriate to corral in defensive 50. If you're a defender, you make sure that you get the man. Great kick by McPhee is more the story than screwup by Gram.

RL was talking on TV about how NDS wasn't doing enough off the ball (I think that means defensive things), but did better last week. I think Gram is in the same boat..needs to do a lot more off the ball to put pressure on the opposition ball carriers. He probably needs to do more work on his upper body and I still reckon he is still improving.
Gram did all right on friday night, I feel as though his work off the ball has improved. However, had at least 2 very, very gettable shots on goal in the 2nd quarter though that a player of AFL standard should be kicking. Mind you, he wasn't the only culprit in that regard! He is a very inconsistent kick ( the same can be said of Fiora and a few others). His assist to Rooey in the last term was a beauty but overall he usually butchers the ball. If he can get his disposal right then he can be one of our most damaging players.
IMO that is probably the biggest difference between us and the elite teams at the minute - our disposal (esp. into our fwd line). I feel that our disposal was better on friday night but we still aren't efficient enough. Compare the delivery that Buddy gets to Rooey - there is no comparison at all.

what game were you watching !!! ? Gram was worst on ground his kicking was terrible my wife(not exactly a footy person) was shocked how that bloke in number 1 couldnt hit the side of a barn by foot . half efforts soft tackles that get brushed off pointing to the free player and not going after him , not putting his body into the contest .... being flat footed at every contest ! this is not acceptable grammy not by a long shot i felt ashamed hee wore the jumper of the most couragious/all in player our club has seen .... he better lift this week of else its time to sent the so called star to the MAGOOS

+ 11ty billion.
His work off the ball was terrible. Yes he had 2 shots at goal - but other than the nice pass into F50 for Roo - everything else was soft. He doesn't shut players down, he misses tackles when he decides to tackle, he was the player that did nothing for his teammates. Very soft effort. Needs to lift dramatically.
