Is anyone else listening to Mark Dorstep interviewing "Joey" Montagna?
A guy rings up and puts him right on the spot about nobody flying the flag when X was put down. His answer was (imho) to put it mildly PW

Well we'd be able to judge a lot better for ourselves if you'd bothered to tell us what his answer wasplumtire wrote:Is anyone else listening to Mark Dorstep interviewing "Joey" Montagna?

THE BUBBLE HAS BURST
2011 player sponsor
the west incident = not reportable
retaliation = st kilda players would have got weeks.
allessio (eleventy feet tall, and 120 kgs) STANDS on bakers leg = no charge, baker reflex kicks out of pain = 2 weeks
go figure
milne scragged and jumper punched = no case
milne retaliates = 2 weeks
go figure
kray slings lenny into the hordings, no report because kray said sorry
lenny misses several weeks with a busted collarbone.
why would ANY saint retaliate when clearly NO geelong player would have been reported and any st kilda player caught flying the flag would have got 4 to 10e7 weeks
frankly if baker was there and pushed someone over he'd have got about 30 weeks, and if he punched someone the AFL would have shot him.
and Im struggling to think of anyone other than a st kilda player to get reported for 'attempted striking'...
really.

agree
what was his answer?
WCE were a disgrace how scared they were of barry - i can only assume noone saw it.
saints dont have anyone tough (and i mean street fight tough) apart from Bakes in the team right now. we need bakes back badly. and hat happned to maguire. he seems to have lost his hard edge.
hawks and cats both have 1 or 2 guys that are genuine hard men.

genuine hard men means what these days?
its not like back in the 70's where they could go around whacking blokes
any of the 22 players could have and should have flown the flag
and i don't think Geelong have any hard men either, whats "hard" about tripping a bloke
also, did anyone else notice how Bartel totally shirked a contest in the final minutes of the first quarter, shows more of what they're really about then any bumps behind play.....

hard men still count for something. im not talking about whacking blokes. just having a psychological edge.The_Dud wrote:genuine hard men means what these days?

Mooney is a hard man. You want to fight him?

whats the worst that can happen?
99% of players aren't dumb enough to do anything serious these days
but i did admire his 'hard man' trip.....

Didn't notice that one, but did notice him throwing a short jab into Goddard's guts while he was shepparding a teammate out on the wing in the 1st quarter (I think around the 12 min mark). He's lucky Goddard didn't hit the deck and carry on...although if he did he probably wouldn't have been cited because he's a Brownlow medallist and they never do anything wrong.The_Dud wrote:genuine hard men means what these days?

my opinion of Geelong is that they try to give the impression that they're tough by taking cheap shots at opposition players (tripping, cleaning up blokes who aren't looking, whacking blokes behind play) but when it comes to the real test of toughness, putting your body on the line, they are no where to be seen
still carrying those handbags
also, i have a feeling they think that if they shave there heads, it also makes them look tougher.....

Did the Weagles player who confronted Hall immediately after he clocked Staker get two week?Dan Warna wrote:any saints player who retaliated 2 weeks plus and rising.
= No.
You can retaliate without clocking back.
You come in and show the flag.
Yes you may get a melee out of it...but you stick up for your team-mates.
However after having said that because the incident happened behind play like it did with te ball moving away...i am not actually sure how many saints players would have seen it to react to.

its a complete joke.
In fact I'd rather have the NSW liberals and the NSW labor forming a govt to run the AFL
they'd be slightly less incompetent and slighty less corrupt.

I only heard the first part of the interview - up until Joey answered that caller.st.byron wrote:what was his answer?plumtire wrote:Is anyone else listening to Mark Dorstep interviewing "Joey" Montagna?

Initially Doran asked hium about teh Barry Hall incident.
Joey answered that it had nothing to do with us (Saints) and it was an AFL issue.
Then Doran (who claims to still have not seen it) asked played comments by Ox, Franci and KB and asked about the West 'hit' on X.
Joey said that very few players would have seen it because it was 'off teh ball' / 'behind play'.
When asked why no-one 'flew the flag' - his response was no-one saw what happened.
Doran asked if the Club was happy with no-one 'flying the flag'?
Joey replied that they (the players/coaches) had spoken about the lack of response.
DOran then asked if the Club were 'happy' with the MRP decision on this.
Joey's response was along the lines of :-
'I think the Club is quietly asking the AFL about it.'
The caller referred to in plumtire's original posat then rang and sstated he thought the Saints lack of response in the second and third quarter to this incident and others 'changed the course of the game'.
That's when I stopped listening so I don't know Joey's answer but I'm sure it would be along similar lines to what he already answered.

flying the flag will come with wins and confidence
its dissapointing to see noone come to x and do the 'right' thing however you will find once we get a roll on we will do it more and instigate it more often to assert physical authority
when we start instigating push and shoves you know we are swtiched on about showing authority and playing for the men in the trenches alongside them

"It's a work in progress," Lyon said.
If you actually pick through that interview there are some important things.
First most players didn't see it. That was the REASON (not excuse) for no player coming in to fly the flag. But the group has talked about the lack of this. I would assume that once this is aired they will focus on putting this right. Which is a very good sign.

Leigh Montagna has just confirmed it....SOFT AS
His Answer: "no one saw it, too far away from it to respond" it was'nt the answer itself but the way he accepted the fact that cheap shots were being doled out and nothing being done about it I agree entirely that Geelong are going back to old ways cheap shots, playing the man behind play and saying how "tough" they are...remember the whinging pre- Wizard cup GF about A Hamill The point I'm trying to make is that the coach needs to instill some toughness into the St Kilda GROUP

Plumtire,
did you actually listen to the full interview or just his one answer to why they didn't fly the flag. As I mentioned, the identified (why) that happened, but still had a discussion about it not happening. Therefore they have indentified this lack of toughness and will address it.

You are spot on, they may be prone to the odd cheap shot but I don't remember too many Cats taking too many backward steps or being easily pushed off the ball in a one on one.congorozides wrote:nowhere to be seen?The_Dud wrote:my opinion of Geelong is that they try to give the impression that they're tough by taking cheap shots at opposition players (tripping, cleaning up blokes who aren't looking, whacking blokes behind play) but when it comes to the real test of toughness, putting your body on the line, they are no where to be seen

Punching, tripping and knocking blokes 20m off the ball out isn't tough however the fact they run hard and in straight lines and take their whack when needed to get the ball does. They are currently the hardest team in the comp.

Jonathon Brown is a genuine hard man. He may not belt many players anymore, but dont tell me the opposition dont keep half an eye on his whereabouts on the paddock. You can still intimidate the oppostion without doing what Braindead did the other night. We have lacked an intimidator since Hamill retired.
