Essendon's run...

Post: # 549329Post True Blue Sainter »

As we have heard so much about (yada yada yada Essendon are so quick etc.); how are we going to contain their run? Players like Dyson, Stanton, Winderlich, Nash, Davey and Lovett love to run with the ball in their hands and are all very skilful...

How are we best off trying to counteract this?

WE can stop them.

We can stop them for one quarter before our slow plodding players knacker themselves then get run to the shisenhausen by those bombers players.

Then we'll fire up in the third quarter and our dud midfield and forwardline will miss 98% of shots at goal.

Looking forward to it!!

Been wondering about this all week - in the last two weeks the Saints have been carved up on the rebound. The Bombers haven't been playing the rebound game as long or well as the 'dogs or Geelong, but they gave the Dogs a scare last Friday, while holding their own in the clearances against a team that smashed us in the middle.

The simple answer ought to be win the clearances and be smart with the ball, but we struggle with the second of those two, and Essendon's one of the few teams with good matchups for 3 tall forwards.

Much hyperbole has been given to the last two weeks, and it remains only round 5 so while retaining perspective how we handle it will be interesting as it will give a much better ltmus test of where we're at than the last 2 rounds realistically have.

Yep mostly right. Possession game but need to contain the turnover rate or "this could go down to the wire".

Must win midfield and clearances to be competitive.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency

You are spot on, if we can cut out (or at least minimise) our errors this could be the game that showcases our potential.

We have the skill, endeavour and know how to smash Essendon in the clearances, if we can retain the ball once we have it, it could become messy for the red and blacks.

That said if we don't step up at the stoppages and are sloppy with the ball this will be another terrible night for us in our recent history against the bombrays.

If we can't beat them without there two gun forwards and a few others, then it's time for the club to seriously consider where it's going.

As negative as Brown-Coat comes across,it's the truth, his 'analysis' right there is spot on to how we play.

Lose to Essendon, and it's time Westaway stands in and asks the coaching panel what's going on with this club

Given the 'green light' from the MRP this week, we should have a concerted effort to 'block', 'shepherd' or just 'take-out' their quicker runners.

It's now 'legal' to do, so lets avail ourselves of the tactic.

We are very lucky that Lucas is out and that Lloyd is doubtfull. If they were both playing........ The fact that they are not playing gives us a 50 50 chance of winning.

We must free up Gram and/or Goddard and let them run and bounce off the half backline and deliver the ball to our forwards. If we can do that then I'm confident we can win.

On the other hand, if Lyon decides to have all of our 18 players in Essendon's forward line when they've got the ball then goodnight. We will be smashed. At all times we must tell Gehrig, Kosi, Milne and Schnieder to stay in the attacking 50 metre arc.

as has been mentioned in other threads it comes down to speed of ball movement.

the bombers have a lot of roar leg speed but that is irrevelant if we can dominate the clearances like we did last week and actually convert.

I would have thought that the Lions or Tigers would have roar leg speed, but thats just me :-)

we seem to be a 1 quarter team atm.

if we string 2 quarters together we'd win everything, 3 and we'd top the percentages.

Ross Lyon will orchestrate a win against the Bombers by his tried and tested method of getting numbers behind the ball. Surely if we get 17 players behind the footy no side has enough skill to pin-point a pass inside the 50, oh no.

Tactical genius.

We just need to hit them hard in the packs, and curb the influence of Jobe Watson, who is their only genuine, inside clearance player in the absence of Jason Johnson...

Why 17, at times I've noticed all 18 players in our defensive 50 metre arc. But you're right, usually it's 17 with Gehrig in the centre square. What a pathetic and miserable gameplan. You would think that with Kosi and Roo you would adopt a more attacking style to stretch the other teams but hell no. Come hell or high water we will play Sydney style!!
