Delivery to forwards...

Post: # 549484Post True Blue Sainter »

Who can we rely upon, to say, hit a 35-40m pass lace-out onto a leading forward's chest say, 80% of the time?

I'd say atm, I'd back Dal (but he doesn't get the ball in a dangerous enough position anymore), Harvs, Goddard and Joey..

Once upon a time I'd also back Bally, Lenny, X and even Gram to hit a pretty simple target the majority of the time.

i agree with you one Dal, Harves, Goddard (but haven't really seen if he's still at the same level after his knee) and Joey, and would add Roo and Gehrig to that list when they do get the ball outside 50

Lenny used to be an awesome kick before his knee reco, i think he's continuing to improve tho

Its a cycle.

Our forwards dont trust the midfielders to hit them on the lead, so they dont lead.

How often do we see Roo, Kosi and G, initiate body contact in one on one marking contests, because they dont lead?

This requires the mids to bomb the ball long and high.

On the flip side, the mids are so used to the forwards not leading into space, they just bomb it in long anyway.

Granted, this is tough on Roo as he works harder than any forward ive ever seen in my life, but in terms of the way the Geelong forwards led and worked into space on Saturday - theres no comparison.

Could it be because the three amigos don't have enough room in which to lead into?

We have one standout in delivery.

Goddard. Others cough it up when under minor pressure.

Dal is close but needs protection from others to benefit the team with his skills.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

You need to protect the ball handler to increase posession efficiency

Bit hard for Dal to hit our forwards when he's kicking out from Full Back (a role he should NOT be doing...whats the point of a specialist kicker when 75% of the time all he does is chip it 25m to a teammate in a pocket)

The problem with our midfielders "bombing" it is that they bomb from 80-90m out and the ball is picked off by the wall of opposition defenders 30m from goal. If Roo and G are covered we need to kick more to the hot spot and back Kosi one out. He's a cracking contested mark and 15m out from goal is about his distance 8-)
