actually pretty sure he kicked 10 goals in the SANFL or something similar as a 18 year old before injuries started kicking in when he crossed over to the saints.
went pretty high in the draft too, but pretty much pined for home.
must have tricked 4 clubs at least because geelong and essendon made a big play for him as well.

Two wrongs don't make a right.
However by the time we took Watts....the game speed and run had greatly moved on....and we had all of GTrain, Roo, Kosi and Brooks.
Given that he was basically a lumbering marking target given the above factors trading for him with our first round pick was simply daft......and most likely if his dad had not been the CEO we would not have taken him.

at the time Geelong and essendon were bidding for him, and his dad was the leverage that saw him come to us instead of Geelong or essendon.
Both sides were desperate for a tall marking forward at the time.
He was I guess seen as a long term prospect at the time.
he's what? 22? 23 now?

He would still be cooling his heels behind Kosi and Roo...with Allen going past him.Dan Warna wrote:

Not to mention Gilbert the swingman.
Recruiting a spare for a spare was not good thinking......at least when;
*our ruck stocks were thin
*not enough mids
*no true HF aprt from Hamill
*no successor the Max at FB

Should never have been delisted when Matthew Ferguson retains his spot.
At that stage, we had a surplus of running defenders and a potential shortage of key forwards (we didn't know Gehrig was coming back).
Even now, I maintain he shouldn't have been cut after he showed some excellent signs late in the year for Casey.
Made for a handy back-up and real future project, but Ross Lyon preferred to go with a slow, half-back flanker who's had too many chances already.
Shows potential, but that's it. Struggling at the moment as well.
Seems to have not made any progress in the off-season...

Is it just me or is he the most overrated junior on our list?saintsRrising wrote:Not to mention Gilbert the swingman.

...and i reckon him bagging another haul of ten (maybe a few more cant remember) goals in the SANFL just before that got everyone interested in him.Dan Warna wrote:at the time Geelong and essendon were bidding for him, and his dad was the leverage that saw him come to us instead of Geelong or essendon.

Two wrongs don't make a right? I don't recall making a judgement on either recruiting dept. If I were I'd say that 2 recruiting dept.s got it wrong on Watts. The Saints certainly aren't alone on not getting a lot of value out of the '05 1st rounder, and Adelaide certainly isn't alone in not getting much out of their '03 1st rounder, but there's no shades of grey around the word "delisted".saintsRrising wrote:BAM! Stories will doubtless about as to nepotism, etc. etc. or how he was about to make it in Adelaide, or the ankle was the end... but realistically, he's just another busted 1st rounder on 2 teams lists, who in spite of at one stage looking likely, never panned out.

he was perceived as an exciting future high marking forward who could ruck a bit.matrixcutter wrote:...and i reckon him bagging another haul of ten (maybe a few more cant remember) goals in the SANFL just before that got everyone interested in him.Dan Warna wrote:at the time Geelong and essendon were bidding for him, and his dad was the leverage that saw him come to us instead of Geelong or essendon.

he refused to sign with Adelaide and or port and a few clubs put their hands up for him.
he didn't pan out, but he's not the first or the last big man to fail.
tbh he's not the first or the last first round pick to fail
the SANFL is the premier division outside the AFL, and marginally ahead of the VFL, and way ahead of the WAFL
for a kid to dominate at 17/18 playing as a ruck forward, with the potential to grow another inch or two (kosi put on 2 inches and goddard put on an inch and a half) after recruitment would have been an exciting prospect.
I reckon essendon/geelong/st kilda were thinking this was the next paul salmon here, ruck, mark, and kick truly.
he didn't pan out, either through attitude, injury, thinking it would come easy for him etc, but at the time many were thinking awesome we beat geelong and essendon to a future potential star.

However yes any one draft descison can be ignored.
It is the summation over time that is important
For mine, post Waldron we by and large stuffed up way way too often with our drafts and trades..

His decision to take on Ablett was ordinary at best and his kick into Stokes on the mark defied logic, but otherwise he had a good game. I especially liked him when he was taken out of the backline and played up the ground. He was everywhere - kicked two goals, worried Stokes out of one from point blank, ran into the centre off the wing and even played in the centre for a few centre bounces. held his own in the middle, winning a few ground balls against Geelong's midfield.evertonfc wrote:Is it just me or is [Gilbert] the most overrated junior on our list?
