Another opinion
Living in Alice I just got around to watching the game.
I have been reading the forum and was under the impression there was no hope for the St's.
The bulldogs were really good, no way they can do that all season.
This week against the Cats I don't think Gehrig or Milne will give us anything.
So C Gardiner and I like Briss in for those two. Hopefully M Gardiner can take Blakes spot.
And lastly Ralph, I still think he can play, Just wish the Hospital handball king would get
some composure. Anyway like to see Dempster or Gwilt in for him.
The St's were not that bad. I know 38 points looks it, They just never looked like scoring.
Riewoldt needs more help.

So you think Birss would do a better job than Milne?squiz wrote:Watch and see what Scarlet does to Gerhig. And
Milne will not touch the ball in the Cats backline.
Neither will do well agains't the Cats.
Anyway time will tell.
No matter who you bring in, they wont do a better job on Scarlett than Gehrig.

milne's our leading goal-kicker this season and gehrig's been our leading goal-kicker since 2003.squiz wrote:Watch and see what Scarlet does to Gerhig. And

i don't think dropping either is the answer for a team that was the lowest scoring in the competition last year.
these guys are proven goal-kickers and the cats, at the very least, will need good players on them.
however, you are right that riewoldt needs help. personally i'd give him a run on the wing with instructions to drift forward and kick goals. that might cut down the double-teaming of him and reduce our enormous reliance on him.
c: blake, hayes, riewoldt
hf: dal santo, koschitzke, gilbert/bj
f: milne, gehrig, schneider
as others point out the "numbers behind the ball" edict often means that the guys who are selected to kick goals are regularly seen traipsing all over telstra dome worrying about their opponent.
my question to RL is "what is wrong with having forwards in your forward line?"
Why not play Rooy on the forward with an instruction to kick goals. I still dont understand why we would move our best forward and by a clear margin to a wing so we dont kick it to him to often.bigcarl wrote:milne's our leading goal-kicker this season and gehrig's been our leading goal-kicker since 2003.squiz wrote:Watch and see what Scarlet does to Gerhig. thought that might lure you out of hiding, pluggerplugger66 wrote:Why not play Rooy on the forward with an instruction to kick goals. I still dont understand why we would move our best forward and by a clear margin to a wing so we dont kick it to him to often.
i just think it might help remove the logjam that appears at chb every week.
they know we'll kick it to riewoldt every time so they put a couple of guys on him. the ball spills to ground and is cleared away by their dominant half back line. but we still mindlessly aim every attack at roo.
it's predictable and easily countered.
for what it is worth, i think moving riewoldt to the wing for a while might actually increase his goals output.
he's an extraordinary player with extraordinary endurance and is likely to run them ragged in this position.
They can keep changing opponents on him so we wont run anyone ragged except himself. How will playing him further away from goals increase his output? Whatever happened to your 3 Divas forward line. You have given up quickly after only one loss.bigcarl wrote:thought that might lure you out of hiding, plugger .plugger66 wrote:Why not play Rooy on the forward with an instruction to kick goals. i haven't really given up on it. i'd still see him playing forward of centre much of the time. just starting on a wing and moving forward through the lines.plugger66 wrote:Whatever happened to your 3 Divas forward line. You have given up quickly after only one loss.
it will take away a bit of our predictability and maximise our use of riewoldt's extraordinary powers of endurance.
What happens when his opponent moves forward. He may spend 50% of the game in the backline or a long way from goals.bigcarl wrote:i haven't really given up on it. i'd still see him playing forward of centre much of the time. just starting on a wing and moving forward through the lines.plugger66 wrote:Whatever happened to your 3 Divas forward line. Another thing is the Cats who are clearly the best side are probably the most perdictable so there is nothing wrong with that.

this is half the problem with the team, mate. we're too concerned with what our opponents are doing rather than making the play ourselves.plugger66 wrote:What happens when his opponent moves forward. He may spend 50% of the game in the backline or a long way from goals.
i know this goes against "accountable football" dogma, but i'd tell riewoldt not to chase his man into the backline.
if they are happy to leave riewoldt unmanned on centre wing/half forward it is a win for us, imo, and we will absolutely smash them on the rebound.
make them man up on us.

Like Dal did on Hill last week. That worked well didnt it. If he is a wingman he must follow his player otherwise with the Cats skill his player will kill us. A FF might not have to follow his player so why not play him on the forward line. That seems like a good idea.

well what i'm saying is start him on the wing. nominally he'd be a winger, but in reality he'd be a half forward like he is now. so you'd still have 3 Divas. it's just that one would start on the wing.plugger66 wrote:If he is a wingman he must follow his player otherwise with the Cats skill his player will kill us.
and perhaps starting him there would mean he won't be triple-teamed at every opportunity.

Just let's say the definitive question will be asked of every player this week, with no exceptions.
Reputations are on the line now.
If we succeed, well that is only what we expect.
If we fail - well we will go there if and when it happens.
There are enough players under extreme pressure now without naming anyone and putting specifically those players named under more pressure.
Our mid-field has to win the greater percentage of the ball and then use it to advantage, our icon forwards have to kick goals (plural) and provide "lock in" pressure and our defence have to stand up given an advantage that those delivering into Geelong's attacking region are under such pressure that their disposal skills falter.

Just to add a thought.
We are playing the benchmark team (last year's premiers) at the best time in respect to seeing exactly where we are at and how realistic our expectations are - as a team and in respect to what players bring to the team.
If we had played them with 3 wins on the board and no losses we could have made excuses if we did not win - "just an off day" etc. etc. much the same as the excuses for last week.
After last week, and the comment this week by all and sundry (and correctly so), there will be no excuses for a maximum performance not being delivered by St Kilda.
Hopefully Geelong will resort to "We played them at the wrong time, they were stung and we copped the reaction. The chances of them playing with that commitment in the future are probably pretty low so we arn't really worried by the loss".
