Reality check needed: Riewoldt
Author: Sebastian Hassett
4:50 PM Tue 08 April, 2008

ST KILDA captain Nick Riewoldt says there’s no reason to panic despite the Saints’ capitulation at the hands of the Western Bulldogs last Friday night.

The Saints led by 37 points at quarter-time and looked set to record an easy victory until the Dogs’ midfield got their act together to outgun their opponents, eventually running out easy 38 point winners.

The reaction was swift and brutal from the media and fans, with questions being asked of several senior players, including Robert Harvey, Nick Dal Santo and Fraser Gehrig ahead of Saturday’s blockbuster against Geelong at Telstra Dome

Tip of the ice berg, we had better hope that friday night was the outlier because our structure, our attack and our mindset were terrible on Friday...

[quote]Riewoldt also defended talented midfielder Nick Dal Santo, who was today criticised by The Age’s Robert Walls for “a selfish, disturbing performanceâ€

Looks like your big 3 forward set up is safe for now BigCarl

However...

“Hopefully (Friday night’s) loss was an aberration." the hopefully part is not too positive.

i've come around to thinking that it will work better with riewoldt starting on the wing and drifting forward.

that way we get the best of both worlds. his enormous tank will ensure that and it will also serve to break down our over-reliance on him at half forward.

I'd play kosi at chf and fraser ff with gilbert and dal on the flanks and milne and schneider in the pockets.

there's some real firepower there but, as someone pointed out yesterday, with our basketball-style game plan often they are all behind the ball, including gehrig, and there is no-one to kick it to.

what's wrong with having your forwards in the forward line?

and as riewoldt points out, it all falls to pieces if you can't get the footy

said goose was unlikely but didn't rule it out all together and expected m. gardiner to play but if there was any doubt said they'd be conservative

I watched the interview on channel ten and I have to say - this is why this bloke should be our captain. he deserves it. he sticvks up for the team, he is St.Kilda through and through.

"UNderestimate guys like Dal at your peril."

Beautiful stuff. :)

Felt kinda reassured after listening to him.

Has not really seemed like himself on-field last couple of weeks.

As a supporter who was skeptical of Roo becoming captain, i must say I was impressed with the support he gave his team mates and the no excuses about friday night.

Keep it up Roo, you are starting to win me over. However, lets get it right on the ground.
