How many games to earn respect???
Just asking what others think of what others feel is the amount of games played at a decent level before they earn respect. In almost all topics discussing team selection the same players no matter there performance the week before are put on the chopping block by posters. Raph Fiora Blake L Fisher are favourites to be gone each week no matter the opinion of coaches in after game reviews. Do we go by the last in first out motto? Do we look at the games played by the individual or on the perceived rank of them on our list? I for one am of the view that everyone starts equal and if you want your spot back you earn it, not just expect it as its perceived they are in the best 22.

I think there's two questions there.
1. How many good games from a player before they earn respect.
2. How do we pick who should get dropped/picked.
I think the answer to question 2 is always as much about match ups and team balance as it is about form.
Question 1 is a hard one. Sometimes a player only needs to play one memorable game to earn respect or total supporter loyalty. Other's like Jason Blake (who is one of my favourite players) are only ever judged on their mistakes and rarely given credit for their hard work - by supporters I mean. The coaches have a completely different agenda.
Thanks for helping with this morning's procrastination Curly.

Just a note, I was watching the replay of the Carlton match and I saw him intercapt a kick on the wing inbetween two carlton players, when the ball was on the ground he withstood the bumps and managed to soccer the ball off the ground and kicked it a good 40m to the boundary line to give us a contested situation in our forward 50, it was great effort. He may not be the best player going around but you can't question his work rate, courage and team mentality...Persuader wrote: Other's like Jason Blake (who is one of my favourite players) are only ever judged on their mistakes and rarely given credit for their hard work - by supporters I mean. Re: How many games to earn respect???
Interesting one Curly. I guess there are numerous ways a plyer earns respect. Consistent performances are one for sure. Achieving above expectations is another. Longevity is also up there along with the obvious things of sheer brilliance, guts and spirit.CURLY wrote:Just asking what others think of what others feel is the amount of games played at a decent level before they earn respect. I already respect Sam Gilbert for e.g just because he's done so well for a young guy without big tickets on him. Same for Geary.
On the other hand I don't have much respect for Fiora because even though he's played more than 100 games, to me he's still soft and piss poor in contests.
Blake has earned respect through sheer hard work, persistence and making the most of his ability. I have more respect for him than I do for Kosi, so I guess respect has a lot to do with making the most of the talent you've been given.
Barrassi said when he was coaching North something like, "It's not enough to be a talented footballer. It's what you do with that talent that counts".
Anyone who pulls on an AFL jumper to play a senior game deserves respect on one level just because they must be a pretty damn good athlete to get there at all. But real respect comes from wringing every ounce of talent out of yourself in that elite environment.
