Impact players

Post: # 541064Post Solar »

After reading some very interesting articles in the paper over coffee this morning, the idea of impact players came to the front. With the higher use of the interchage players are seeing shorter periods of time on the ground. Thus they need to be at a high level for these short 5-10 minute periods.

Who are our IMPACT players?

for mine currently fizz, harvey and dal seem to fit this mould very well.

Impact players should actually make an impact.

Also had 80+% TOG (for the first time in quite a while), so wasn't exactly used as an impact player.

I don't know why many bag Fiora so much.

I have been away and have just returned and so only got to watch the Swans game last night (will watch the Blues game tonight).

After reading some negative comments on Fiora while I was away I took particularly note of his play while I was watching last night.

While yes he did not win a huge number of possessions what he did do, he did very well including a vital intercept late in the game.

In terms of the "impact" player remarks about Banger in todays media....then yes Fiora is being used as an "impact" player by RL this year and last.

He does not tend to use Fiora for full games put uses him in bursts.

ie in the NAB Cup he Dal and Joey were saved for the last quarter to overun the Crows.

His dash and run in the midfield often can break open and change the run of play in our favour and I think RL uses him to "impact" the game in this way. He is also taking his turn as an inside mid on occassion too.

My main negative criticism of Fior is that he should be slotting more goals than he does.

On dash and run...I was also very impressed with X's Swans game against the Swans. He seems to have stepped up a cog this year. I am looking forward to watching his game against the Blues tonight.

Well said sRr re: fiora.

i thought he has been pretty good myself. getting abit sick of him being the team whipping boy along with blake every week.

not every player is a star. fact of life. not every player is an in and under ball winning midfielder.

fiora does his job every week, which is to receive the handball outside the pack. if you put your perspecticles on instead of your critical sunnies, youl see that he does occasionally also go in for the hard ball, and when he does - he usually wins it.

fiora has been very servicable since coming across from punt road and most of the criticism he recieves on here is unwarranted.

stop expecting him to become luke ball or aaron hamill because its not going to happen.

like sRr, the only ongoing criticism i have of fizz is his lack of goals. someone with his talent and skills should be kicking a goal a week IMO.

When we have better players, and young prospects who could do with some AFL experience that may be as good or better than Fiora, we should play them.

I agree that fiora was in our best 10 players against the blues, but due to his time on ground should not be considered an "impact player".

My main issue is that when we have tried Fizz as an impact player towards the end of the game, his brain was not up to the pace of the game and he struggled to read the play. I heard Chris Connoly on SEN today saying that after 8 minutes on the bench your brain starts to wander and you lose focus.

I dont think we have any better players (who arent currently playing) who play that outside running midfield or wing position. Also, there arent any young players in that position who would benefit from getting the game time and improve our chances of winning matches.

Fiora is an outside running midfielder - a wingman. We dont have many of these, look at our midfield stocks... piled up with inside midfielders. Hopefully over the next 12-18 months Geary will step up to be a regular member of our midfield rotations. Hes been fantastic so far. We have Armo waiting in the wings, but he is by no means a running or outside midfielder. He has alot of grunt about him and is definitely another 'inside' midfielder.

i took particular notice of fiora and blake in the carton game......both were more than servicable.......the continued criticism of them is only by people who can't watch them objectively......

It used to be Thommo and Peckett as they were ageing and were used sparingly so their old legs still looked new when the speed had gone out of the game

Harvey could be used in this role but still has so much to offer

Goddard coming back from injury perhaps??
