(Almost) A full list - first time ever?
Not wishing to speak too soon, it appears, tribunal suspension excepted, that we have close to a full list to choose from. Taking the Saints and the Scorpions together, 35 of our list of 38 are named in the two teams, the exceptions being Steven Jack and Eljay Connors, not exactly first pick choices.
I wonder when we last had such availability - I bet Grant Thomas or Stan Alves would know!

Ah yes, what might have been in 1997. Whilst all teams have injuries and supporters from other clubs claim it is just an excuse, it is hard to find a team in the last twenty years, perhaps ever, that has won the flag with two of three of their best players out, let alone five or six. Just look at Geelong last year. Take Chapman and Bartel out and there goes the flag. But they played and good luck to them, except in round 4.my les foote wrote:I don't think we've been injury free since '97. Before we lost Smith, Young, Everitt and Vidovic there was a stage we had no injuries and only Boofhead Hall was out suspended.

For someone who calls themselves a perfectionist, and who likes to infer that he/she has inside knowledge at the club, you need to get it right.perfectionist wrote:Steven Jack and Eljay Connors

No Stinger, to be fair, I can't see anybody called "Jack" on this team sheet.stinger wrote:perfectionist wrote: Taking the Saints and the Scorpions together, 35 of our list of 38 are named in the two teams, the exceptions being Steven Jack and Eljay Connors, not exactly first pick choices.

Way back in 2004, when Thomas could coach, we were regularly only 1 or 2 players short of full strength - ie. our best 22 nearly all available.
We'd regularly lose a player a round through suspension, but not injury.
Not sure if all our bottom teir players were available though like they are now?

theoretically given those not in casey team would play in casey reserves practice match then Riccardo is correct Only Bakes and Attard are not playing somewhere this weekend.

Alot has been spoken about us 'falling away' in 2004 due to various reasons (ie. going to the movies etc.), however injury was the reason.
Brett Voss broke his jaw and lost confidence when he came back. Hamill broke down. Guerra did his shoulder. Alot of guys actually played out the year, but few were actually fit.
Here's a little extract from early 2005, at a time when many of the injured guys from 2004 were recovering from ops done during the pre-season....
"Thomas is wary of citing St Kilda's lengthy injury list as an excuse for its poor start to the season, but knows that it is the principal reason his Saints are one win from three games. St Kilda will tomorrow line up against Melbourne without its captain, centre half-forward and best player Riewoldt, most experienced midfielder Robert Harvey, regular full-back Luke Penny and most versatile tall player, Justin Koschitzke. "We have never had our personnel together this year," Thomas said this week. "All the sides that are up, like Melbourne, the Kangaroos and Adelaide, basically have their full lists. It is just a critical factor in footy these days. Every game you need your best players to play."
We literally have been crippled since mid-late 2004.

Missing commas: Steven, Jack and Connors, Eljay from the Official Saints Players list. My humble apologies to the pedants. Doesn't particularly alter the point of the thread.
And rodgerfox (or is that foxrodger?) is quite right, especially in the game that counted - the PF - only Hamill was out, but three of four other top ten players were only half fit, and we lost by a goal.

It is good to see the new Casey coach is prepared to accept the teams role as St Kilda reserves.
With 16 St Kilda players selected one of whom will be the genuine emergency for St Kilda, 15 will play in Casey's 22.
Last year some of these St Kilda players would be playing for Casey reserves as the coach had a limit on number of St Kilda players he would allow.
He insisted on having a core of Casey players for consistency.
Ejay Connors and rookies Glenn Chivers, Luke Van Rheenan and Khan Haretuku may yet play for Casey reserves.
Jayden Attard was not promoted off the rookie list only because he will miss most, if not all, of the season.
The Casey team is front and centre on their website but does anyone know where to find Casey reserves selected team sheet.

When one considers the fact that all the key changes have been made from late July (the appointment of John Peake) until late November (the appointment of Dave Misson), I'm willing to give them more than just 1 year.
Facts are that the previous embolders had no stuff the incoming could use. Sad, but true. The best example was Matthew Ferguson's 12 (yes, 12) hamstring injuries. Did they have data? Did they have documented treatment history? Had he been treated differentially for the 12? Not on your freakin' Nellie.
So, they'll build. If it doesn't happen straight away, it'll improve through this year and into next.
The only reason this year is so important is because of Harv. Otherwise it's just another year.

Very twee Large. Point is we will be at our best under this regime next year, because they will have had a full year with the support crew in place.
However, and this is from the highest echelons, the confounding element is the talent of the players. From the coach to the conditioning gurus, they believe we should need another year, but are continually surprised by how much talent they have at their disposal.
So, it's all up for grabs. Good, idn't it?

Just taking this point further and going off-topic for just a second (if I may...), this issue really works against the former coach with respects to his payout claim IMO. (please don't take this into a bunfight OK?)The OtherThommo wrote: Facts are that the previous embolders had no stuff the incoming could use. Sad, but true.
