The turning point

Post: # 535450Post st.byron »

Am interested in people's take on what happened after we dominated the first twenty minutes of the game.
Thought King and the on-ballers were great in the first, winning most of the centre breaks and stopages. Unfortunately, we weren't able to hurt them enough on the scoreboard.
After that though, we didn't seem to have as much run and carry and became very static and started going sideways and chipping it around.
Why?
Was it because Sydney manned up better? Was t because they were getting more of the ball out of the stoppages? Was it us or them that caused a halt to the down the guts, running, attacking footy we played in the first?

they actually started to clog up the midfield and started winning the hard ball. We didn't cope with this very well and started to ship it around a little with play usually starting off our half back compared to the centre in the first 20 minutes.

Or was it because Lyon and Roos are playing with their own egos ?

Getting sick of this we are old mates routine and using Sydneys brand of
lucky if we win footy style each time they meet up

We played a brand of footy that Sydney own, once Sydney settled they were able to pick it apart.

Our players don't lead hard enough for it to be effective, we don't lead away from traffic. We are not confident enough to run the ball at the opposition and suck them in off their lines. Sydney do this very well, they suck in one or two tacklers, it's like an old fashioned game of British Bulldog.

We'll learn but I would prefer us to have three or four different game plans, game plans that involve isolating a set groups of players that know where each other run to.

Develop a long kicking game once the ball is in the centre. Develop another game where we back our running and handball skills, a continual knock on game.

My thinking is that last night was a great result after a surprising NAB Cup, we did not play well but we got four points, no injuries and had possibly four, five or six of our best 22 (by the end of the year) in the stands.

Agree with you Solar. Noticed that Sydney started to win the stoppages and tighten up their marking. Once that hapened all of our flow seemed to dissipate and there were many times when I saw a Saint with a mark or free between the fifties look up and see all of our guys manned up and a static forward line. So then they start to chip it around and bingo, we're playing Sydney's game.
FWIW, it was one of the worst games of league footy I've ever seen. Bloody awful as a spectacle.
