Lazar whacking half of Freo
Hey, just wondering if anyone has vision of Lazar belting those two Freo players in the first round of the 1995 Ansett Australia Cup. That was Freo's first game in the AFL. What an intiation!
But anyway ... I reckon it'd make a great avatar. As much as I love my pic of Nicky, I reckon I might update it to that.
I still remember Sandy Roberts' understated commentary: "And Laser's not happy. LASER'S NOT HAPPY."
It still makes me laugh.
Shame about the six weeks Lazar got, though.

Still waiting for closure ... if you get my drift.

Would explain why Freo players always duck and weave - s'pose there still looking out for the big Laze!! Poor traumatised little boys!!
I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

Who were the two players he hit?
I think one may have been Brendan Krummel. I think he was one also one of Byron Picketts first victims.

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Thanks for that. It's my favorite footy pic of him too, though the one after THAT game at Victoria Park is my all-time favorite.jill wrote:Great post but ctqs please don't change avatar - remind everyone what a star Nick was!
The picture of him taking a screamer over a Richmond player was taken by an Age photographer in (I think) 1987. I was doing my cadetship at the paper a few years later and when I was on EG in September 1990, I chose that photo to run with the little piece in EG previewing the grand final between Essendon and Collingwood the following day. I grew up in Richmond and hated the Tigers with a passion in those days, so did that to 1) highlight the Saints in GF week, and 2) annoy the hell out of all my mates who followed the Tigers.

I remember Lazar clocking Krummel vividly, a mate & I were filling out our old Age Dreamteams (when you had to cut the team out of the paper & post it in) & he just asked if Lazar was worth a spot as a back up ruckman. I replied 'nah he'll whack someone & cop a month'. 10 seconds later Lazar has spat the dummy & split Krummel open.

HA HA HA
TRIBUNAL – LAZAR VIDOVIC the Saints key ruckman was suspended for six matches on pleading guilty to two charges of striking against Freo’s Brendan Krummel and Matthew Burton in last Friday’s Ansett Cup opener …

Anyone who can remember the mayhem he created against Fremantle in a pre-season game a couple of years earlier will be aware that was no idle boast.
Vidovic scored a six-week suspension after unleashing a furious barrage that downed Brendan Krummel, among others.
“I half hit Spider Burton in the head then Krummel ran in from the side and I gave him a right that came from nowhere,â€

Interesting page that. Here's some info from the time about the plugger to sydney trade.
TONY LOCKETT became a Sydney player on Friday October 21 in a complex deal which will see — St Kilda get Sydney’s first draft selection and Swan player ROBERT NEILL; Sydney will trade SCOTT WATTERS to Freo and in return the Saints get Port Adelaide’s DARREN WAKEMAN who was tied to the Dockers; Sydney trades SIMON MINTON-CONNELL to St Kilda who in turn will pass him to Hawthorn in return for the Hawks first and third draft choice plus JOSHUA KITCHEN; the Hawks will trade GLEN NUGENT for the Saints fourth draft choice
Another interesting incident from the freo game.
<||> Fremantle vice-captain SCOTT WATTERS was fined $750 for urinating on the field during an Ansett Cup break against St Kilda on Feb 24. Attention was drawn to the incident when a photograph appeared in The Australian …
