Milne is a definate starter in our best 18, so is Max
Max is the only defender in our team who can actually defend in a one-on-one contest, all the others (Goose, S Fisher, Raph) give away a free nearly everytime
let Max do the defending, and Max can let Fisher/Goose/BJ do the fancy rebound work

No spot for Hudghton? I find that hard to credit...
Fair point that our defense is still a fair question mark as to whose going to be there:
S. Fisher, Hudghton, Maguire, Gilbert, Goddard and Gram are 6 walkup starts, but that's a lot of height, and doesn't include Baker, L. Fisher, and others.
Looking forward to seeing what a healthy St. Kilda backline looks like in '08

Some tall forwards stand and leap for their marks - Koschitske.
But others rely on a lead, they barely leave the ground - Gehrig, Riewoldt.
The aim of all leading forwards is to get a break on their defender often with the help of a block from a team mate like Milne.
If the forward gets a break, very few defenders have the closing speed to get close enough to be in the contest.
Sam Fisher and Matt Maguire do not have the speed.
Max has great closing speed, if he can't reach a spoil he knocks the man to ground. Forcing the forward to drop the mark. You can do this legitimately if you are close enough to be in the contest.
I used to laugh when Troy Schwarze was played on a leading forward, he would arrive on the mark 5 seconds late and put his hands up to say "yes he'e my opponent". GT must have really had it in for the guy.

agree. gilbert has the closing speed but, as others have said, is just a little raw and green at the moment.ace wrote:Max has great closing speed, if he can't reach a spoil he knocks the man to ground. Forcing the forward to drop the mark.
let's hope he's a quick study because if max's hammys keep going TWANG gilbert is going to have to step up sooner rather than later

It's why Fisher and Maguire will never be as good as Hudghton defensively.
We need Maxie fit this year to win a flag IMO.
They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

To be fair, not many FBs are, and ever have been.Oh When the Saints wrote:

Max is a genuine superstar FB.
N Brown and Fevola say he's best they've played against.
For a big forward and a small forward to say that about the same guy is pretty remarkable.

I like Robbo, usually pretty to the point & doesn't bloke smoke up other journo's like some.
A pretty spot on assessment, although, as other have stated, off the mark with his 'best 22'.
Max is without doubt our best 'deep' defender. The way teams set up these days you usually end up with 3 tall forwards & 1 mid size marking forward that roam around the forward 75 metres. A team needs 4 flexible defenders to match this. The days of the old CHB & FB are long gone, although teams try to get their players to play as close to their preferred spot as possible (or get opposition players out of their comfort zone).
Chips is a very good all round tall defender although is susceptible to a quick leading forward. Gilbo will learn heaps from Max & SOS & will be a super player down back for years to come. Goose is another super player who just needs to get his body right & he will remind all the short memoried folk just how good he was in 04-05-06 (was right in AA contention for 05 & until he got hurt in 06.)
Max is a gun & I share the belief that we will need him fit & firing in September to be a show. I also don't mind seeing Gilbo/Raph/etc getting experience early in the year if Maxie isn't 100%.
