made me think of a game way back in the sanfl with norwood or someone like that being out on the ground waiting for the other team and so the umpire balled the ball up and the norwood (or whoever) player ran the whole field and dobbed the goal classic

I'm glad they have a week off - if we had to play next week, we'd surely lose. They looked absolutely stuffed at the family day yesterday. The heat had really sapped em' By the week after, they should be ready to roll again.Huzzad wrote:You mean the week after. We get a break. Which sucks. I want round one to come already! It was a great move and probably won us the game in the end.
Should have bought in a truck load of ice and spread it around the room.

Long stint in rooms could be costly

ST KILDA will face a "please explain" or fine from the AFL over its tardy start to the final quarter on Saturday night. But the last term was never in danger of being started without the Saints in their positions despite them lingering too long in the AAMI Stadium changerooms.
Under AFL rules, clubs must be on the field by a certain time, but St Kilda was several minutes late after leaving the arena during Saturday's NAB Cup final to escape the oppressive heat.
It led to speculation the ball might simply be bounced to start the final stanza with only Adelaide players afield.
Instead, St Kilda is likely to hand several thousand dollars of its $380,000 prizemoney back, with the AFL to review the incident at its football operations meeting this morning.
The first and third-quarter breaks were extended from six to eight minutes because of the near-40C temperatures.
But as AAMI Stadium fans started chanting and booing, the Crows - which had remained on the ground -- were left waiting for their opponents.
Eventually the Saints emerged and the game was re-started several minutes late.
AFL Umpires boss Jeff Gieschen said it was not the role of the umpires to warn the club it was behind schedule.
"We don't get instructions to just bounce the ball which might have happened in junior games or country games. We don't do that.
"There is a fines process in place, so rather than umpires penalising teams, that is done by the controlling body.
"We can't bounce the ball, but if a team refused to come out, or didn't come out, they could be deemed to be forfeiting a match. But that would be after some considerable time."
On Saturday night Gieschen correctly over-ruled a Kurt Tippett supergoal that was awarded by the umpires after a down-field free kick to Michael Doughty outside 50m.
He said yesterday Doughty had two options: attempting a supergoal from where the infringement took place 60m from goal, or allowing Tippett the point-blank shot for a six-point goal.
Gieschen instantly over-ruled after contacting the umpires by microphone, and Adelaide went from squaring the scores at 61 points to trailing by three points in a match the Crows lost by less than a goal.
"In NAB Cup games if the score needed to be amended, it was changed at the end of quarters, but in last quarters people need to know the exact score so we do it straight away," he said.
"We were able to do it straight away on Saturday so both teams knew exactly what the score was in the dying minutes."
He said the new no-go zone behind umpires at centre bounces had been "extremely positive rule", with no umpires hit at stoppages during the NAB Cup.
The AFL could decide to introduce the guideline for the season proper, with the NAB Cup to be reviewed by the league in coming days.

long enough for me to think the ump was going to start the game!Solar wrote:hey I'm confused, how long were we at the 3/4 time huddle? longer then 8 mins?
if a normal 3/4 time rest is 8 mins it would of been close to 13 mins?

I have just timed it - via PC time and it will be a matter of seconds- saints running out as the 8th minute finished. The first and third-quarter breaks were extended from six to eight minutes because of the near-40C temperatures.

Drain on 3aw tonight said that the Saints ran onto the ground at 8 minutes...and so by implication werea few seconds late.
He indicated that he expected a please explain from the AFL..but as today wasa public holiday had not received one yet.
But who cares??/
Personally I think it is great to see the Saints at last being the club smart enough to bend the rules our way.
Craig the sports scientist must be fuming at himself that he kept his guys out in the heat while the Saints had cooler conditions to recover in.
