Team for round 1 - Early Speculation
So we have to drop 3 players from the team that played against the crows last night, not including Baker who misses through suspension. Add to this Max and Gehrig coming back into the side, but not Goddard or Maguire.
Here is my suggestion as to how it will pan out.
In: Gehrig, Hudghton
Out: Baker, Jones, R. Clarke, Allen, Fiora, Geary.
ST KILDA
B: Gilbert, Hudghton, Blake
HB: Gram, S Fisher, L Fisher
C: Schneider, Hayes, Montagna
HF: Harvey, Riewoldt, X Clarke
F: Gehrig, Koschitzke, C. Gardiner
Foll: King, Dal Santo, Ball
I/C: M. Gardiner, Birss, Armitage, Milne
Emg: Jones, R Clarke, Fiora
That's a pretty fomidable lineup, L. Fisher ahead of Geary on experience, imo. But it's a close one. Geary can play taller than L. Fisher, so it might come down to matchups.

otiman, I think it's close
Our backline will be IMO
geary Max L.Fisher
raph Chips gram
geary playing as a small running back allows gram more scope to push into the midfield running off half back with geary starting deeper. Geary to take buchanon, max to take o'laughlan and chips takes Hall. Fish takes O'keiffe and raph plays on the midsizedforward (not suprised if we see a much younger swans team this year so it's hard to get an idea of who else will play forward.).
The midfield name themselves
King Ball Hayes
Joey Dal X
For mine this is our best midfield, would like to see king hold the marks when he falls back a kick behind play. I think the player that has slipped under the radar has been luke ball. I thought he had regained his speed and started to get some penetration in his kicks. Get some games under his belt and he might be the big dark horse. Hayes, joey and dal are all class, really impressed that dal seems to be winning the big moments in games now. Awesome sign. Xavier can work in with schneider at half forward/wing. Needs to add polish to his game and kick those goals but he is looking really great and this could be his break out year
The forward line is the interesting one.
Kosi, roo and Gehrig name themselves. Add milne and schneider you have a very balanced forward line. The sixth forward is important. Schneider moving up into the midfield means that we could be a little top heavy down forward so the ground level work from charlie gardnier will be important
gardiner Roo schnieder
milne kosi Gehrig
So then you get to the bench, 7 players (including the emergencies) will be very hard.
Gardiner slots in as the back up ruck and hopefully he keeps going from strength to strength. Underbelly needs to keep working hard as a link man off half back.
Gilbert gets the second bench spot. If we don't go with raph down back gilbert can start there but he seems to give us the best value through working him off the bench. If raph plays at HB (and ross seems to like using him) gilbert could play on the wing or even give the swans a match up headache at 190 odd cm's down forward.
Harvey gets the third bench spot and once the heat is off the game harvey is still fantastic. So smart with the ball and still after 21 years get to the position of gain the ball.
The final spot goes to a midfielder as part of the rotation and this is where I have the biggest problem. In the end IMO it comes down to armo and birss. Both give us something different but I can't split them. Armo had a great first three NAB cup games, has lost the puppy fat from last year and was makign a great impact. Big booming kick, awesome tackler and AFL ready body. Birss on the other hand is a more experienced inside midfielder. He also can play at half forward with good hands on the lead.
So my bench is
Gardiner Harvey gilbert birss
emergency
armo jones allen
(note: I did not consider BJ, Goose, dempster and baker)

The team i have has St Kilda tagging Jason Blake on "his" opponent in Adam Goodes. I would be very very disapointed if this happens. Blake has not demanded a spot in the side for round one, especially after his dismal game against Adelaide. If he plays however, the only matchup i can see is his supposeable easybeat in Adam Goodes. If this is to be the case im going to look at the odds for Goodes getting the 3 Brownlow votes.
My prefered method of containing Goodes would to team tag him with midfielders. Armitage springs to mind with his tackling, as does Ball. Yes they are considerably shorter than Goodes but if he is going to be playing as a midfielder himself it isnt going to advantage him, that much.
An "out of the square" option would be to play Charlie Gardiner one on one with him. Charlie has a great tank, hes tall and has proved he can mark well. His defensive skills arent fantastic however I believe he could do ok on Adam.
Gilbert could go on him in bursts but i doubt he has the tank to run with him all day. Also he is better matched for O'Keefe.
Leigh Fisher has also proved to be a more than handy tagger. He only gives 6cm to Goodes which isnt significant. He could also be used with Ball and Armitage in a team tag.
But then really, is Goodes worth all this attention? Why not just set Xavier Clarke head to head with him on the wing/on ball? Yes he gives off 12cm, whether that is too much, im not sure.
Possible changes for our team, if Goddard is fit enough and Blake isnt "required" for a tagging position, are
In: B.Goddard, D.Armitage
Out: J.Blake, A.Fiora

Im waiting to see if he plays for Casey on Friday night, Mick, but im not holding my breath.
Max is a very, very important player for us, and I dont think Lyon will throw him into round one having only played a half of football before doing a hammy.
However, if he plays on Friday, I think he might get the nod over Raph or Geary...

I feel the side will be a really experienced side. I think they will line up like:
B: LFisher Hughton Goddard
HB: Blake SFisher Gram
C: Montagna Hayes XClarke
HF: Schneider Riewoldt CGardiner
F: Milne Koschitzke Gherig
R: King Dal Santo Ball
Int: MGardiner Harvey Gilbert Fiora
Emerg: RClarke Armitage Geary
I would like to see Geary & Armitage in, dont know who to leave out!

Similar to most teams but personally I wouldn't play Blake atm... was very ordinary VS Crows and is still too much of a liability.
Got pinged early for a stupid holding the ball, decision making was poor and the coaching team obviously had no faith in moving him onto the blazing hot Tippet despite being the most senior backman... don't know his game time but was unsighted for the remainder of the game

What is clear to me from the possible line-ups against the Swans is that St Kilda's backlines remain a major concern. Apart from Sam Fisher there is not another KP defender if Max fails to regain full fitness, and against the likes of Hall, O'Keeffe, O'Loughlin and Davis the Saints could find themselves in trouble if our midfield fail to dominate - which they won't! Fail I mean.......
If Raph Clarke keeps his spot, (and based on his recent performances he will be a weak link which will be exploited by the Swans) I can see Kosi spending a fair bit of time roaming in defence, and maybe Charlie Gardiner as well, if the Swans forwards start to dominate. Still reckon Raph should play HF where his seeming lackadaisical style and special flair could be useful.

WOW!!!!! is this hard. Can you remember when it was so hard to narrow done your 22????
Like probably most here I keep re-doing my best 22 for round 1.......and I keep having the really aganosie over my 22.
Also at presnt it is trying to squeeze in players.....
In past years it has been zooming up to 18 or so, but then wishing for someonea little better to put in.
Each time I have to leave out someone that would really like in.
The players
For example I would love to play both Armo and Geary to get some senior game time with the idea of developing our best 22 by finals time.
On the other hand Swans match are normally hard fought games and experience counts......and so Birrs and Fiora may have the edge there.
Raph.....or Blake. Raph has more potential, but Blake is safer but only steady bet for now.
Positional Choice
Not only do i have more players than I can fit it....but apart from key backs I am spoilt for postional choice with lots of options.
Do I go for extra midfielders???? Armo, X and Harvey on the bench?
Extra defenders? Geary, Raph and Blake all on the bench?
Lots of tagging options? Such as Birrs and Blake over Armo and raph?Geary
Two rucks or one? King and Gardi.... or one of them with Blake as a utility?
3 small forwards or 2? Does Charlie get picked...or Jones or X instead?
The good thing is that in each case it is a choice of good options rather than choosing the lesser of two evils (or weaknesses).

Quite a few of you don't want to include the Blake.
Nevertheless, I reckon he will be one of the first selected.
I am also expecting to see Jones in the team (I don't want him there, but he seems to be the coach's pet ATM).

armitage has shown some good form, but i suspect he will have to work harder for a senior call up.
also Birss and fiora seem auto selections atm as well.
geary to miss as well.

lot to like about his endeavour, not much to like about his disposal, by hand or foot.ralphysaints35 wrote:i Like jones!
wouldnt be suprised if we see goddard in for round one,
I hope we dont rush max and goddard back.
22 weeks + Finals is a long season and I'd rather see goddard, goose and max back when they are absolutely ready.
nothing you can do about another random hit or accident, but a reoccurance due to coming back prematurely will make me very dissapointed.
I'd hope the mistakes of the past are behind us.

I would be surprised if Goddard plays straight up, maybe a few more weeks. Fiora has disappointed me in the preseason and I would give Jones or Armo the nod on sheer work ethic. Max shouldn't play unless he is 100% as he is not getting over injuries as quick as he used to and gets injured pretty easily these days. Raph needs to pick up the tempo a bit and may have trouble holding his spot. Rix should be persisted with in the backline as we still lack a bit of body strength down there.
Round 1..
B: LFisher SFisher Rix
HB: Gram Blake Baker
C: NDS Hayes Montagna
HF: Schneider Roo XClarke
FF: Harvey Kozi CGardiner
Foll King Ball Milne
Bench: Jones MGardiner Gehrig Armo
Emerg: Geary RClarke Fiora Birss
This year we should use Gtrain off the bench, rotate with CGardiner in the forward line. Harvs, Milne and NDS to alternate on wing, pocket and on the ball. Give Armo as much senior time as possible.

That predicted team looks pretty close MSG. And I agree that Max will not get up for R1. Birss has been better than Fiora over the NAB games, so he gets the nod. I'd suggest X in, Fiora out. I've swapped a few positions around; Blake to CHB, S. Fisher to FB, Gilbert to a HBF.
So my team is:
B: L.Fisher, S. Fisher, R. Clarke
HB: Gram, Blake, Gilbert
C: Schneider, Hayes, Montagna
HF: C.Gardiner, Riewoldt, X. Clarke
F: Koschitzke, Gehrig, Milne
Foll: King, Ball, Dal Santo
Int: Birss, Jones, M.Gardiner, Harvey

Is Sam Fisher more creative @CHB?
I have a lot of memories of Sam operating beautifully from this position and linking up smoothely with teammates. Roos could be very pleased to have him kept out of things at FB. I'm assuming the worst (ie) Maxie wont play rd.1. I don't like the idea of Blake at CHB but then again he is no wouse. - it's just his disposal.
If Gehrig and Roo are ripe we may see Kosi brought down back. I don't like this possibility but it could trouble the Swannie forwards.
Rossi coaching against his old team again may throw up some surprises.
Perhaps Sam Fisher with Gilbert and Blake playing well could defend better than the Swans defence thereby leaving the red carpet laid out for the Saint Kilda forwards.
Of coarse the big temptation is getting Raph Clarke into 'the zone' that really denies the opposition of possession. With Maguire, Goddard, Baker and perhaps Max absent Gram ; Sam & Gilbert will need some class support.
Jaryd Allen is making a few pundits take notice and the Bendigo(?) boy could surprise us all with his place in the team.
Excited and Positive.

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.

Re: Team for round 1 - Early Speculation
JONES IN, ARMITAGE OUT... otherwise , your 22 is spot on IMOOtiman wrote:So we have to drop 3 players from the team that played against the crows last night, not including Baker who misses through suspension. Add to this Max and Gehrig coming back into the side, but not Goddard or Maguire.
Here is my suggestion as to how it will pan out.
In: Gehrig, Hudghton
Out: Baker, Jones, R. Clarke, Allen, Fiora, Geary.
ST KILDA
B: Gilbert, Hudghton, Blake
HB: Gram, S Fisher, L Fisher
C: Schneider, Hayes, Montagna
HF: Harvey, Riewoldt, X Clarke
F: Gehrig, Koschitzke, C. Gardiner
Foll: King, Dal Santo, Ball
I/C: M. Gardiner, Birss, Armitage, Milne
Emg: Jones, R Clarke, Fiora
That's a pretty fomidable lineup, L. Fisher ahead of Geary on experience, imo. But it's a close one. Geary can play taller than L. Fisher, so it might come down to matchups.
