THE month-long mystery involving Nick Riewoldt's injured knee has been solved. Riewoldt has been suffering tendinitis since returning from the Christmas break. The St Kilda star also has inflammation at the back of his knee capsule.
The capsule houses the knee joint, but when the back of the capsule becomes inflamed it causes pain when the leg is fully extended.
Riewoldt had criss-crossed strapping on his right knee on Friday that prevented him fully straightening his leg.
St Kilda said this week that Riewoldt had a capsule problem, not a strained anterior cruciate ligament.
When the knee straightens, or hyper-extends, it can pinch the front of the knee joint, causing pain or tendinitis.
Riewoldt normally kicks with a straight leg but his knee was noticeably bent as he kicked at goal against Essendon on Friday night.
Former Collingwood captain Nathan Buckley this week said he had used the same strapping, and while it helped his knee problem, it put pressure on his hamstrings.
Riewoldt has tried to lessen the problem by not kicking long for a month and St Kilda hopes it has the problem under control.
The 25-year-old, who is a strong chance to be named sole captain within days, yesterday trained without strapping and will play in the NAB Cup grand final against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night.
Sports doctor Peter Larkins said yesterday that a strained capsule would heal in 3-6 weeks as long as Riewoldt did not aggravate the injury.
St Kilda looks set to field its strongest team of the NAB Cup as the club builds towards Round 1.
Key talls Justin Koschitzke and Sam Fisher will both return and Luke Ball, Lenny Hayes, Michael Gardiner and Steven King should play.
Max Hudghton did only 10 minutes of standing skills at yesterday's training session and looks remarkably like a player who tore his hamstring 10 days ago, not one who suffered cramp, as the club claimed.
Robert Harvey, criticised by former coach Grant Thomas for his lacklustre display on Friday, didn't train so he must be considered doubtful.
A session the club trumpeted as its first open hit-out of the year saw the media ejected before any serious drills.
St Kilda onballer Leigh Montagna said yesterday the club would not split hairs about whether the NAB Cup or Round 1 were more prestigious. Instead, the club intended to win both.
But he said the players had noticed the annual talkfest about the merits of the NAB Cup had been more negative than in recent years.
"We have been a little bit surprised (with people talking down the NAB Cup)," Montagna said. "It doesn't matter what type of game we are playing in, the players are always trying to win.
"The coaches have to worry about managing their players, but once the players get out there, we are trying to win."
Thomas inferred 36-year-old Harvey has gone on a season too long after his possession averages dropped from 22 a match for the first 15 games of 2007 to 13 in the last month of the season.
"That was a real surprise," Montagna said.
"We saw that in the paper and Harvs was not going to be like he was, but we don't expect him to be.
"We just want him to play a role for the team and he can still be a damaging player.
"I think it's a bit too early to be talking about that with Robert Harvey."

I'm confused, I thought that was a very fair article, in fact it explained roos injury very very well.
All ralph suggested was that we would play the STRONGEST team so FAR IN THE NAB CUP.... hate to be reading into things that aren't there.
God to see they kicked the journos out before they did any serious drills, keep them guessing boys!

so i guess this year we'll be getting the same old song and dance from the club regarding injuriesMax Hudghton did only 10 minutes of standing skills at yesterday's training session and looks remarkably like a player who tore his hamstring 10 days ago, not one who suffered cramp, as the club claimed.
All posters are equal, but some posters are more equal than others.
To be fair, he reporter did only see a portion of it, he admitted they got kicked out before the main drills started.... so its a long bow to take his word that max is not worse then the club has suggested.The_Dud wrote:so i guess this year we'll be getting the same old song and dance from the club regarding injuriesMax Hudghton did only 10 minutes of standing skills at yesterday's training session and looks remarkably like a player who tore his hamstring 10 days ago, not one who suffered cramp, as the club claimed.

I've got an idea stinger. You should arrange to meet up with Jon - ralphj@heraldsun.com.au.stinger wrote:what's with this ralph guy......a st kilda side minus banger, fraser, maxxie and bj is hardly a full strength side ffs.....journos....
Rather than castigating him on an Internet forum under an anonymous pseudynom, you could go and catch up with him face-to-face over a beer or two?
Or maybe you'd rather stay at home, huddled over a keyboard and with Big Brother re-runs providing ambient noise instead
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

There's no shame in admitting you were wrong, this is likely to be the strongest team we have fielded so far, considering Max and Harvey have been quiet and BJ hasn't even been out there and Riewoldt makes up for the lack of Gehrig...stinger wrote:vacuous space wrote:Where does he say we're at full strength?
