GT, Dermy etc. after Game on Friday night on SEN, RE Harvey.
GT officially crossed the line after Friday night when he questioned Harvey's pace, mobility, vision and awareness over the past year or so. What the f*** is he on?
He was our best midfeilder last year FFS you wanker Thomas.
Dermy then continued on this, saying he was worst on ground, or along those lines and said that perhaps he isn't up to AFL standard anymore.
How dare they question the great man

The Adelaide forward scouts will have watched that game..and noted that Harvs is "past it"
Come Saturday night they will treat him with no respect...just like they did on that wonderful night in Sept 05..and noone here needs reminding what happened then

so very true.
Harves isn't beyond criticism for his performances. However, you'd think that some commentators would resist the urge to 'go too early' on someone of Harves' calibre.
Some serious egg will be on their faces shortly in their quest to be the first to notice his 'decline'. Headline grabbing, nothing more.
And put GT's comments into perspective....he wanted to exit Harvey out about 3 years ago. GT is all about trying to justify his pathetic coaching thinking of the past. Nothing surer.

lets wait untill the real stuff starts before we make any judgements on teams and players.
the only thing worth discussing in nab cup time is how rookies look.
if ross lyon is anything like his mentor (roosy) the players will be feeling pretty half assed about the nab cup.
no point being a star in february.

i think GT also made some comments about it being early in the season, and harvey warms up etc, which also is a fair call.
Also harvey will still be going at his 'one pace' when the 'pups' are burnt out.
injury free, harvey will still be steaming at the end of the game.
racked up a few hot games in 06 and 07 when he was too old and too slow.
ranked in the 10% of players before injury, before finishing hte season statistically in the top 20. (most media awards had harvey in the top 10 to 20 players before injury)
so lets just see how and where we are with banger round 11/12 IMO.

To be fair, Harvey made a few bad moves. He's just rusty.
I think he's slowed down in both mind and body considerably as a player, but when he's fully fit and ready, he's a very solid contributor.
The critics are allowed to have their say, remember that. It's an opinion, that's all.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
I cannot believe GT who is in the media and gets paid for an opinion would have an opinion of a Saints player that wasnt positive. After all he was sacked from the club so he should only say positive things about the Saints even if he doesnt beieve it. At the moment he only says 90% positive about us, should be 100% and he should bag all the other clubs.

IMO we should be thanking GT and Derms for their ill-informed opinions.
They have effectively guaranteed a BOG performance from the Great Man this weekend.
It wasn't enough that we are playing the Crows - they go and stir him up like this??
Mark my words - R Harvey, BOG!
Very wily move from Grant.

Generally not. Consensus is that they are paid for their opinions and therefore have not only a right but a responsibility to express them.
Ox reckons they would be regretting their words, but Ox is a donkey.
It's a frigging practice match FFS, he actually played quite well, and Robert Harvey will still be a most valuable player for us this year, rotating from the bench. Sure he slowed down a bit last part of last season, however I think he's fit enough, determined enough and passionate enough to make it to September in good form. Especially if we're in the race for the Cup.
This is the general word and this is correct. For mine.

GT was on SEN this morning.....
My respect for the man, has completely gone.
Sue the club, don't pay monies that you owe and now bag one of the greatest St Kilda players ever to play the game
Thanks for your 5 years now rack off.

I am excited to stay at St Kilda and this is a great result for the Club and all our fans. I’m proud to be part of the Saints and am pleased to be playing football with the Clubâ€

So even though he paid to have an opinion he should only have positive opinions on Saints players. He also said Harvey will probably fight back and prove him wrong.Dal_Santos_Gal wrote:GT was on SEN this morning.....

But he's entitled to voice his opinion, afterall he is a paid media commentator/journalist!Quixote wrote:Mr Magic wrote:Anybody backing Dermie and GT's opinions?Quixote wrote: BTW plenty of talk right now SEN on this...

There's nothing wrong with giving an unpopular opinion. I think the point here is that this opinion was given by Dermie and GT based on viewing Harves for a half of a NAB game.
GT coached us for a number of years during 'pre-season' comps and whilst he tried to win it on 1 occassion (and did) on other occasions he didn't try to win it (notably 2005). He therefore shold have a better understanding of what coaches and players are trying to do out there. The problem was he seemed to ignore his knowledge and make some remarks he knew would be treated as controversial.
The question is what is his role as a commentator?
Is it primarily to impart some of his inside knowledge about AFL footy or is it to make 'sensational' comments to try and be controversial? Only he and his employers know the answer to that.
I now will wonder every time he says something if he is just trying to be controversial for controversy sake, or is he 'fair dinkum' in what he is saying?
He didnt say the comments initially. Dermie did and GT agreed so I dont think he was being sensationalist. He could and would loved to be proved wrong on this occasion IMO. No one even the great Harvs is above being told he isnt playing as well as he can even in this case I think it is way to early to tell. GT said Friday plus his poor finish to the season had him thinking that it may be harder this year. And lets face it his last few games were not great last year. Very good early but may have got tired as the season went on.
Re your post Magic --
I guess that is the role of the listener, to filter the information we are given. This applies across all platforms of the media, and is a unique process for each and every one of us.
Thomas was indeed hired as a specialist commentator, someone who could impart as you say inside knowledge.
However he and Dermie, as with most sports-media based public voices, also seem to adhere to a stipulation (contractual or not) to create controversy, or a talking point. To spark debate. This, for mine, comes back to corporate marketing.
How much of what they say you take as genuine, and how much as BS, is entirely up to you.
PS, if you want my answer to that re GT, I think he is more often than not honest. Alarmingly so at times.

That's fine Plugger, As I said earlier, I didn't hear the broadcast so I am going on what has been reported in the 2 threads on here.plugger66 wrote:He didnt say the comments initially. From those threads it would appear that GT said something to raise the ire of a lot of people, including other commentaters/broadcasters on SEN (I heard Mark Doran and Msrk Robinson discussing it on SEN at about 1:20) and the commentary seems to be less about what Dermie said (he is known to have said silly things in the past) and more about what GT said. From that I can only assume that those posting on here about it were reasonably accurate in their recollections.
Many seem to have recalled GT's famous quote from last year about 'exiting Harves out' and quite reasonably making the connection from those sentiments to his apparent comments on Friday night.
One thing is for sure - GT obviously thinks Harves should have retired.
Lucky for Harves and his adoring fans (including me) GT no longer has the ability to directly influence that decision.
