speaking of training- at the beginning of last weeks game they interviewed Ross and mentioned the mornings training and that Ross hadn't been there. Does anyone know if the guys that didn't play in Canberra had a training session last saturday?

I found Goose's thoughts on the forwards to be particularly interesting. He seems to think we'll go with the three talls with Charlie pushing up the ground, Milne at ground level and Jones rotating in. That might be as good an indicator as any that Charlie and Jones will play in round one.

What we're doing with our backs and mids is anybody's guess.

I posted before Jones played there that given RL's expressed desire to improve our level of forward pressure that Jones, if played, was best suited to playing up forward where his pace and hard tackling can be used to adavantage.

To me this role is his "best fit" in the team.

With GTrain, Kosi and roo all up foward.....when the ball is not marked to have someone of Jones pace and tackling ability could be very importnat in holding the ball in...either by crumbing it directly or by harrying the opposition backmen when they have gathered the spoilt ball.

Schneider while a very cpable small forward may well be looked at to havea greater midfield role along with X. If so
then Milne and Jones may well be our small forwars with 3 talls...and the medium in Charlie. This is a good blend.

worth a thought but is he a good enough goal-kicker?

imo jones should be given a shot at the midfield rotations and we could then more often rest ball and dal santo forward.

dal, in particular, is becoming pretty dangerous close to goals and every time he kicks one the entire team goes up a notch. ball is also more than handy. remember the three he kicked against hawthorn last season as a small forward

i don't want anyone in our front half who doesn't regularly contribute on the scoreboard

perhaps the answer is the 3 Divas, milne and a "medium" like charlie or gilbert. then the other spot in a six-man set-up goes to a resting midfielder ... dal, ball, montagna, harvey, schneider, xman or jones if he can improve his kicking for goal.

as you say, it is a good mix.

on the subject of putting a score on the board, does charlie needs some work on his kicking for goals?

i've got a geelong mate who says they liked charlie down there but his kicking for goal wasn't up to scratch

That is what I have heard too...which is one reason I fancy Charlie playing the link (mini-Roo) role further up the ground.

If you play HF these days you are effectively part of the midfield.

I like the ide of him putting pressure on the opposition HBs to stop the rebound...or at least put them under pressure so that they do not easily move the ball out.

Jones is an odd one mix wise. He's okay at kicking in a straight line, he's good at winning the ball, his chase and tackling are great... but his field kicking is heart in mouth stuff. It's like he's not capable of kicking it low and hard, every kick - be it placekick or on the run - is a lob, he kicks to an area rather than a man, and often that puts someone under pressure they didn't need (happened more than a few times coming off half back Friday night). The exception was a F50 entry during the Tigers game in which he pulled off a beautiful round the body drop it amidst traffic to a leading forward in a manner I had seen no signs of prior, and haven't seen again since.

Anyway, as opposed to most ball winning mids, whose goal kicking is a problem compared to their field kicking, the kick I'm most comfortable with Jones taking is one at the goals. IMO, if there's a spot for Jones, it's got to be HFF or crumbing forward, his kicking just rules him out of too many other positions... but barring that one fundamental and glaring deficiency, Jones has been easy to like during preseason.

agree srr, but can he put a score on the board? if he can actually kick goals then i'm all for it.

imo guys who can't kick goals shouldn't be anywhere near them, despite anything they might add in "forward pressure"
