and let's not forget McGough, Ackland etc...etc...The blip on the radar Beveridge speaks of was not all of his own doing.
In recent years the club has traded for reluctant defender Luke Penny (pick 17), injury-prone forward Fergus Watts (pick 17), ruckman Barry Brooks (picks 6, 31).
thankfully the days of bloodsucker leech Thomas Maximus and his boy wonder Bundy oops that was the wrong national draft player code number Rendell are over
is it any wonder Lyon was appalled with the recruiting that had taken place in recent years upon his arrival

Why? Looks to have put on a heap of muscle this year, attacked the ball with vigor against Geelong and has pace to burn. Lets just wait and see what happens when he finishes his apprenticeship.Otiman wrote:I still don't think i'll ever get over us picking Brad Howard at 27 or whatever pick it was.

Like all teams but I think we still have done very well. No team can claim a clean slate of great recruiting.hAyES wrote:I still think Howard could be a good player. If he attacks the ball like he did against Geelong, he's also got the pace to be even better.
But yes some horrible, horrible draft choices there.

The issue I have with Howard, is that from most perspectives he was a rookie or 4th round pick at best. Getting Allen with our next pick more than made up for it though. To get Allen at 27 and Howard at 58, I don't think many people would have been disappointed in that.
Somehow we got word that the Bulldogs were interested, but I think we were bluffed.
JB has on many occasions stated that he doesn't look at recruiting AFL players, so I believe that the calls on Ackland, McGough, and Brooks were done by others in the coaching/recruiting area.

How do you know we were bluffed? All these ratings of players outside the top dozen or so is mostly speculative at best.Otiman wrote:The issue I have with Howard, is that from most perspectives he was a rookie or 4th round pick at best. Did you see some of Howard's games last year? He was struggling to be picked for Casey Seniors. Obviously some kids take longer to come good, but I couldn't imagine what JB saw in him the year before, also being an older recruit.CURLY wrote:How do you know we were bluffed? This is not to say that he won't come good and play 200 games for us, but the signs were just not there to be worth #27, unless he was picked up on pure athleticism.

Except that it was not actually technically his last year.ausfatcat wrote:Ironically possibly Bevo's best year was his last......
Armo is looking the goods, Geary, Eddy..... All very very longshots that looked to have paid off.
Last year Peake took the reins...and Bevo became his assistant.
So Peake was the man in the hot seat making the recommendations.

John Beveridge>>>>>>>>You and me Yes I did see some of Howards games but I also saw a lot of Gilberts the year before. At 27 theres always a chance that the player wont turn out so I will just back the experts.Otiman wrote:Did you see some of Howard's games last year? He was struggling to be picked for Casey Seniors. "We have been very conservative with our rookie selections, and this is the first year the board have said, 'You can have your full complement'," Beveridge said.
Firstly is that factually correct??...I thought that we for the second year have taken our full compliment of rookies.
*I seem to remember that in 2006 we took Wall, VR, Eddy, Jones, Attard and Geary...
*Plus we stocked up on the NSW scholarship scheme..
Secondly if you don't push you do not get..
I heard the previous coach speak on the rookie system once when he was interviewed and he stated that he would rather use his coaching resources elsewhere and saw no need to do more in that area.
Contrast this with the present coach who demanded that the Board (the last Board as they both expanded rookies and address conditioning in a more serious way- and yes the new FF Board is contibnuaing and augmenting this) address both our poor conditioning management and lack of rookies.

I thought that Howard has improved hugely since last season.....and that what he has done with limited ground time has looked ok.CURLY wrote:

Still a long way to go though.....but he is obviouslu improving.
As an aside it is interesting that a few pacy players have since been added...the latest being Miles.
They will not all make it...but those who do wil make the team quicker.

The step up from Queensland football to VFL is pretty big. Armo and Gilbert both seemed to struggle a bit with the step up in their first years. We haven't seen much of Howard at all this preseason, but in his limited window, I'd say he's looked bigger, stronger and more able to deal with the higher level of play than he was last year. I would be surprised if he continued to struggle at VFL level this year.Otiman wrote:Did you see some of Howard's games last year? He was struggling to be picked for Casey Seniors. Thomas also is on record as saying that on reflection, he could have done a much better effort in developing young players on the list, after the fact mind you
The fact is that he gave his almost full attention to only a handful of elite player's, and what's worse played favourites
Ross Lyon after just 12 months in control has done a truly wonderful job in quickly rebuilding the list after 5 years of neglect, topping up and wasteful, dumb arse recruiting
