Worst thing with Free Agency

Post: # 521413Post Batnoe »

All this talk about the Gold Coast teams and being able to poach some players scares me, especially with 2 great Gold Coast Stars in Riewoldt and Gilbert

I dont for one second think that either would leave as their choice, but you just dont know what will happen

I think Riewoldt and Gilbert will always want to stay and be one club players, they have that aura about them, but with poaches and the AFL always getting their way we could lose both of them with no compensation.

No way do i want to get rid of Riewoldt, but if we had traded him in the past we could have 2 first round picks and a second rounder for him and if the Gold Coast get their way, we will lose him for nothing.

If this does happen, will we get compensated? i know all other teams will feel the same thing, but we have the best player

well when port and freo came in they got some players from other clubs they got compensated, so I would imagine that this would be the same case. It wont be as much as there worth on a open market thou.

if it happens we will just have to make do

however it could work out well though as in my opinion the club should draft another kpp with their first round draft pick...

so if roo was to ever leave we would have a player ready to at least attempt to fill his shoes in 3 years time

its a long way away and anything could happen...

so no point in really stressing or thinking about it...although with our lack of success this forum as a whole looks for the negatives and seemingly is scared of success and thus lacking patience...

Even if we were compensated it would probably be in a long term sense, this could damage a lot of team's challenges for the flag which could hold some teams back for quite a few years...
Look as Sydney in '05 had they had Barry Hall pached and replaced with a number 1 draf pick, in the long run they would probably get a better player however it would have completely destroyed the balance of their list, the AFL are potentially about to put all clubs in a very difficult position when it comes to list management...

I would still like to see some form of compensation given to teams who lose players either via free agency, or through poaching by Gold Coast and/or West Sydney.

Perhaps even given back the pick that the player was selected with in that draft, or an extra pick at the end of that round.

e.g. Riewoldt or even McQualter being poached would give us pick #17.

Therefore if every teams list is compromised it's even and wont hurt premiership chance overall.
