Could join a select club of appointed captains who never played a game for their club as captain.

luke.l_26 wrote:Fid.. If we're talking long term... perhaps Marc Murphy would have been a good choice.. Sure he is young and all, but didn't they start Carey young? Same as we did with Roo.
Murphy was also the number 1 draft pick, has showed that he can play quality football in a team with fairly mediocre players. IMO, Murphy would have been the logical choice.
Luke...

Murphy is too young and also too raw and there is no way I would compare Murphy with Carey IMO....

Murphy ATM is not a leader IMO

Another player that was appointed captain just after a season was Kane Johnson (Richmond)...

There are players that demonstrate leadership qualities by the way they play the game...

And IMO Judd has that...

Far from a "joke" of a decision IMO, if they are looking to a "long term" captain...

anyway, that's my opinion and some have different views, so be it.

Judd is Carlton now. He should be captain. They are Team Judd now. I don't think I've seen a Carlton jumper for months without Chris Judd wearing it. They've committed a significant portion of their salary cap over a long period of time to making Judd the centre of their team. This is less an appointment than recognising what is blatantly obvious.

I think Judd is a great choice for Captain, however I do agree with the idea of a long-serving player should get priority. Judd is young and can captain later once he has settled in. Even though Stevens has only been there 3 or 4 years, I think he deserved it more than Judd, simply for the time already served at Carlton. I guess time will show whether this was a good move or not.
I agree. Judd is clearly the best choice from a meagre lot overall with the exception of Stevens. I would have made them dual Captains. Players like Waite will have to wait boom boom. :P :P

This "heart and soul for the club" is nonsense IMO...

If a player has talent and has leadership qualities is the thing that clubs consider the most IMO

Don't get me wrong, I hate Carlton as much as most on here.

But I don't believe in bagging a club for the sake of it
All Carlton... whom you obviously don't despise as much as I do.... Who gives a shyte what Carlton thinks is a good idea.

Nonsense?!... Yeah pick a mercenary with a chronic injury who hasn't played a game for you (and still may never) as your captain...
makes sense to me. What was I thinking?

If it happened here I'd be appalled.

Barassi came as Captain/COACH which is a totally different scenario.

Kernahan played a year before he was given the honour to lead his Club.

Judd seems to have 'negotiated' the Captaincy in his 'deal' to join his beloved Blues.

Why do you care so much about another teams captaincy? Surely, we tainted the hallowed role when dividing it among three, and rotating it on a yearly basis, more than giving it to Judd. Many scoffed at us for doing this (and I totally agreed), but that was my club, so I cared. I really couldn't give a rats a*** what another club does with it.

Please enlighten me why the F*** you have stated...

I obviously don't despise.......

Come on...

The "pack" mentality is ridiculous on here IMO...

I have suggested some players in the past that were appointed captains and don't necessary fall into line with the so called "heart and soul of the club"

I have also mention Kane Johnson which you just laugh off...

Were the F*** is your decent comment on the issue???

So your "totally different scenario" on a captain that is also coach has to have "heart and soul" for the club is different scenario is different when he his being "paid" to do so???

So, just when your quote of "soul" comes in???

Again, IMO Judd was their best choice as they seem to have little leaders that would captain the side for the next 6 - 8 years...

Farken sick and tired of slagging other clubs for the sake of it.....

Your statement of "heart and soul" is rubbish IMO and I have tried to prove that theory wrong.

Good luck to him he is a great player IMO

Why do you care enough to bother to post that you don't know why others care enough to post on an Internet Forum thread?

And BTW, when we split the captaincy into 3, we didn't give the honour of leading our Club to someone who had just negotiated a 'deal' to come to our Club. IIRC all 3 of our co-captains ( as well as the previous years co-captains) had at least given some service to our Club, other than negotiating a huge pay packet.

I know, my hypocrisy kmows no bounds. And I wasn't trying to diminish the players who were offered the captaincy, but was trying to explain how, IMHO, the role of captain was diminished in previous years at our great club.

From an leadership and marketing perspective, Chris Judd as Captain makes sense. Do we know the captaincy material or worth of Stevens, Waite etc etc? No...longevity at a Club does not have to be rewarded with the Captaincy. Its perhaps an indictment on their recruiters that leadership potential has been overlooked as a character trait..who knows..Ive nver met any of them.

I'm with Fid a bit on this Carlton bashing too. I was there in the 80's..hated them back then and love nothing more than handiing out the twice yearly thrashing :P The concept that a few on here have of "If you dont kick their heads in at every given opportunity no matter what the situation then you are a troll" is growing a bit tired tho

Aaron Hamill vs the Whitnalls..a classic example..Aaron was pilloried by the ratbag scum media, but..the Whitnalls?? fair game to be sledged by any tabloid journo cos ..well theyre from Carlton 8-)

Oh dear..I'll probaby get called a troll cos I took the blinkers off just for a second and didnt call them carlscum....dear o dear

Great post mate...

sick and tired of the constant "bashing" of other clubs....

Really it is so childish IMO....

I hate them, as I hate all other clubs...

The Saints are my club and for a poster to suggest that I don't despise them as much as them p1sses me off....

I hate them as much as the other sides...

IMO Judd was the best choice for them considering his age and leadership qualities.....

Feed up with the trash talk, some on here act like they are 17...

Yes, I notice that "trash talk" is not part of the new rules, but really it is becoming so boring...

And at times with no substance...

In 1962 St.Kilda farewelled it's captain & vice captain - new recruit from Tasmania appointed captain in '63 - many horrified at the time - seemed to work ok for us!

It would have been more laughable had they not picked Judd. He is the best player in the league - everyone knows that and it would have been a big slap in the face to him. His leadership will be invaluable to Carlton.

Exactly right. More reasons to make him captain than not to make him captain. Apart from one or two players im pretty sure everyone would have been happy for him to captain.

And then we could have rubbished them for not picking him.

What some have failed to grasp is that there is great joy in bagging Carlscum - you know that Club with the silver spoon permanently stuck up its collective ar$e and who never grow tired of belittling the rest of us.

I've often thought that they should be forced to adopt a new logo - an airline sickness bag.
It would represent everything they stood for:-
to remind us of the way they like to conduct business and the fact that they make us all want to vomit.

Do I need to? You don't get it? Really?!

Your 'examples'? Sticks- after a YEAR... Kane Johnson- ??!... and Barassi- captain/coach, Jezza- captain/coach (and both in the dark ages)... killer examples.

Do you really think you're worth attempting to engage rationally?

You're the one behaving like a petulant '17 year old'... My advice stands.
