Not likely. Now he's cracked the 200cm mark we're likely going to train him primarily as a ruckman to partner Van Reehan/Haretaku/McGrath/whoever, which pretty much requires him to dip off the radar to bulk up.
It's not uncommon to see draftee midfielders this time of year, it's rare to see key positions and practically unheard of to see rucks (mature recruits excepted of course)

I would rather have Gardi get all the match practice he can.
and remember too that all of our midfielders have to get used to rucking to Gardi and King. They have to develop insight and teamwork so that it becomes instinctive so that our guys have the edge.
Presently our mids are too used to chasing tail at the ball ups.
McEvoy is very much a pick of the future....2010 and beyond....and in 2008 to play senior football apart from King and Gardiner, Rix also is a better option.

than a top 10 draft pick....??????????

Edit: Haven't seen McEvoy play yet, but going on previous first year ruckmen.

Agreed........McEvoy is gonna be a big part of our future, but no way he is a better option that Rix at this moment in time, he's too young and skinny......Otiman wrote:This year, if we want to win games above all else, then Rix is a better selection.stinger wrote:saintsRrising wrote: Rix also is a better option.

The Carlton ruck darfteee...kruezer or whatever his name was will be playing senior footy this year (did he play in their NAB cub victory?) and he was a first round pick. Is kruezer significantly more devloped than McEvoy then?

Yes he played....was okay, but not breathtaking, kicked a goal with his first kick........he is playing because Carlton have zero ruck talent....not a comparable scenerio with usHuzzad wrote:The Carlton ruck darfteee...kruezer or whatever his name was will be playing senior footy this year (did he play in their NAB cub victory?) and he was a first round pick. Fair enough. With Gardiner, King and Rix, it would be a little silly to introduce him to the side this year, unless *touch wood* they all get injured.saintlee wrote:Yes he played....was okay, but not breathtaking, kicked a goal with his first kick........he is playing because Carlton have zero ruck talent....not a comparable scenerio with usHuzzad wrote:The Carlton ruck darfteee...kruezer or whatever his name was will be playing senior footy this year (did he play in their NAB cub victory?) and he was a first round pick. i remember waching a 17 year old ruckman play his first game.......back in 1963...he was best on the ground by far.....
....yep, carl ditterich even as a young raw kid would teach rix a thing or two....and tear him a new arsehole if rix got narky....
..don't generalise guys.....makes you look silly.....

Things have changed a hell of a lot since then. Rucking is completely differant now. Monkorst would still win ruck duels against Kruzer and Mcevoystinger wrote:i remember waching a 17 year old ruckman play his first game.......back in 1963...he was best on the ground by far.....

surely it depends on the state of physical development of the kid and his football abilityCURLY wrote:Things have changed a hell of a lot since then. Rucking is completely differant now. CURLY wrote:Id back Rix to beat all first year ruckmen. Nothing to do with ability just strength.
no -one would back rix against a young ditterich......well not unless you wanted to look foolish....
,...as i said ..you can't generalise.....ditterich would absolutely flogg rix.....you are comparing a first grade quality tap ruckman who won 20 plus possessions a game against an absolute hack who would knock up getting two possessions and winning one ruck contest...not to advantage i might add.....
ps..rix is no monkhorst

CURLY wrote:Saw young Luenberger last year get butchered by Jamar. We all know you will be the better player just that with superier strength the young blokes struggle. Remember ruckmen these days are 198cm monsters with huge leaps. Can the same be said back then.
some were...graham fellows for example....one of the saints ruckman from the same era was john mcmillian...a huge man at 198cm.....carl was about the same height as some of the plodders we have had recently in the ruck....193cm.....

It is not McEvoy vs Rix...as that will only happen in practice games, but McEvoy vs the AFL's other ruckman as compared with what Rix can achieve.
Now Rix is quite ordinary...but I would see the young and inexperienced McEvoy doing less well in 2008 than Rix.
In addition :
* I would rather save his body the pummelling and let him build his body and experience up.
* As a kid he has a lot to learn about ruck play and I would imagine that he would be one of our new ruck coach Madden's main priorities.
* At Casey he can play more time on the ball, and on the ground..in the Saints seniors he would be mainly getting bench time learning little.

might we see him in a few cameo appearances later in the season should we need another tall forward option (injuries, etc)?

Carl was 6'5". that was how they were measured then, which was a reasonable height for a ruckman then. Bearing in mind our No.1 Ruckman at that time was Alan Morrow, a shade over 6', but a great ruckman all the same.
