Remembering Nicky Winmar

Post: # 517919Post Megamaguire »

Last month i happened to catch a bit of old audio coverage of aboriginal players who excelled at AFL in the last 20 years or so. Nicky 'Elvis' Winmar featured prominantly of coarse.
Today on such a historic and heartening day for Aboriginal people across Australia i couldn't help thinking of Nicky Winmar and the other Indigenous players like Gilbert McAdam and our current duo of Xavier and Raphael Clarke that have made a significant contribution to our Saint Kilda or St. Kilda (stinger that's for you- i know you are a Cuz fan) club.

I remember the day @ Victoria Park when Nicky pointed to his black skin in response to the racist slurs from a group of unthinking collingwood fans - the rest is history.

Anyway just wanted to pay tribute to St. Nick and for all the great memories and stack of awesome marks he provided Saint. supporters in the early nineties in particular. There weren't many clubs that had a player then that could equal the mighty garry ablett at geelong. On many occasions i noticed myself just standing in awe with supporters of both teams to applaud Nicky winmar for his marking brillence. Nicky did his brillient best for Saint Kilda then and he did his best for Indiginous australins that day at victoria park that helped turn around many prejudiced hearts in footy land. Thanks Nicky 'Elvis' Winmar.

I hope you are happy today Nicky. I hope the same sentiment is being shared by 'Gilbee' McAdam and our Clarke brotherstoo .

G O SAINTS!

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.

i used to be in awe of the man and his skills......he was simply too good for his oppents...simply the best when it came to skills....

...i once saw him handball a ball at the left of the feet of his on coming opponent whilst running along a curved boundary line...... the ball stayed in play and nicky gathered it in after avoiding the fumbling hands of his very surprised opponent........magic.....

....i remember russell jeffrey once telling the coach (sheldon).....if you want to win the premiership, you need to get more black magic in the side......he was right......those words came back to me as i watched the indigenous port players carve up the opposition in 2006

.everybody still loves lenny....and we always will

Pity that a thread that started so well has been hijacked. Go find yourselves a Kingswood Country board.

Nicky is a champion in so many ways.

Win it for HIM!

Absolutely love Nicky (in a totally platonic, hero-worship way). Nicky is the reason I love The Saints, he was my first anmd forever favourite player.

I think most here will know of my admiration of Nicky, it even goes far above my Grammy love! The best day of my life was meeting Nicky, and having him look at my tatt and say how good it was, I'll never forget it.
