VFL Team: Frankston Saints
Whilst I'd love us to have our own stand-alone VFL team, the financial
reality is this wont happen.
I heard today on SEN Sam Mitchell talk about how well the Box Hill Hawks works for breeding new players, ie. using Box Hill as a springboard to play for the Hawks say through the rookie list.
This is done through a very close alignment of the VFL and AFL clubs.
Given the Grandstand burnout last night, the Dolphins are pretty gutted at the moment.
A merger of the Dolphins and St.Kilda at a VFL level could formalise a much stronger alignment than say we ever had with the Casey Scorps.
Using the "Saints" name should help lift the VFL club's profile, and cement a firmer relationship/link between VFL and AFL.
I understand our new VFL coach of Casey will work full time, so there are steps already in the right direction.

What I'm getting as is an alignment modelled on what Hawthorn did - they key aspect is using the Saints name.riccardo wrote:This is a smart idea, with one flaw.
St Kilda actually have no team at VFL level, our "reserves" were dispensed with when we aligned with the then-Springvale Scorpions.
I'd love a stand alone team myself, but the reality is either to remain alligned to Casey or dump them in favour of Frankston.

Agreed its a good model, and I'd love to use it - do people with a knowledge of the Dolphins know if they'd be open to this at all?saintspremiers wrote:What I'm getting as is an alignment modelled on what Hawthorn did - they key aspect is using the Saints name.riccardo wrote:This is a smart idea, with one flaw.

It's got nothing to do with using the Saints name, it's about having coaching and support staff with both of Casey and St. Kilda's interests at heart.
Prior to the appointment of Greg Hutchison as coach this year (and perhaps Danny Sexton last year, unsure on his involvement), Casey has been Casey, with no real links to the saints other than having a few of our players gain match fitness with them.

they have been approached in the past about being aligned with afl clubs and they do not want it
im at tafe with a dolphins player (ex afl) and he said to me that the players there hate the idea of being aligned with an afl club as it means less of a chance of getting on the park themselves.
fair enough.
frankston have a great history and wont want to change that unless they really cant manage on their own - which they have done, at least up until now.
