Richmond will unveil Jordan McMahon against St Kilda

STAR Richmond signing Jordan McMahon is set to be unleashed in Friday's week's NAB Cup clash against St Kilda at Telstra Dome after a flawless pre-season.
McMahon joined Richmond from the Western Bulldogs last year, with the Tigers desperate to add some polish and dash to the backline.
McMahon, 24, said he felt mentally and physically refreshed.
Richmond look set to take a side close to full strength into the St Kilda clash, with Matthew Richardson, Nathan Brown, Troy Simmonds and Kane Johnson all expected to play.
McMahon said with Richmond's new-found depth in the backline, he would have to force his way into the side.
McMahon and Mitch Morton - a highly rated trade from West Coast - were both exceptional in the club's intra-club match on Friday.
"I am very happy with the pre-season," McMahon said at the club's Community Camp in Echuca.
"I genuinely do feel a lot fitter than I have ever been. Maybe it's just a state of mind, but it's how I feel at the moment.
"It's a change of club and a change of environment. It's that excitement of the group. They are a really enthusiastic young bunch and it makes it really great for me to train, and that's why I have enjoyed it as much as I have."
While Richmond's backline has been a work in progress, McMahon and Morton will join Joel Bowden, Jake King, Chris Newman and Graham Polak as rebounding defenders trying to slot into the back six.
"Position-wise, nothing has been set in stone," said McMahon, who was swapped for Richmond's No.19 draft pick.
"There are about 40 of us trying to fight for that position in the backline. There is a big group in contention, and the midfield is strong, too."
The only negative is the travel. McMahon lives in Ascot Vale and his travel to training has grown from a few minutes to more than half an hour. He has had to patch up some relationships, too.
"(Matthew Richardson) has always been on the opposition and I had a few words to say to him in the past," he said.
"He's a really good fella. I get along well with him and hopefully I can spend a few years kicking it down there, with him on the other end."
In a short indoor training session, Richard Tambling showed he had fully recovered from an ankle injury sustained on Friday that saw him carried off the ground. The Tigers will play an intra-club match on Thursday.
Richmond are in an excellent position on the injury front, with only No.2 draft pick Trent Cotchin out long-term. The midfielder is still recovering from a broken ankle suffered in the TAC Cup finals.

except if they beat us, which is possible as we may not be trying to win (I mean by choosing a B grade team - the players out there will try to win of course!), they'll all delude themselves that "things will come good" this year!!!riccardo wrote:Wait until he fails to hit Richo square on the chest for the first time and cops the 4 year old girl style hissy fit, he'll soon realise why the Toothless are perennially down the woodwork end of the ladder.

Richmond are going in with a full strength team. We are going in with a reserves team and will consequently lose.
Can someone explain the rationale here? Why are we going out of our way to destroy confidence in the team before the real stuff commences? Why are so many of our first rung players not playing? Surely not injuries, Lyon said he had fixed that up. If it is, why don't Richmond have any injuries? What happened to our "meat and veg" work over the break?

Just not all in the first one.
We don't have any injuries now, but it's all about ensuring the players are perfectly prepared for Round One ... of the real season.
They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Oh dear, here we go again. The NAB cup is all important to some supporters!! I want to see them get off to a flyer come round 1 in the AFL season - not do a Carlton and barnstorm their way through the practice matches!! Why won't collingwood be playing their full strength team?? Nor Geelong?? Why not the Hawks?? It's ony the cellar dwellars that need the impetus and profile of a NAB cup win. The serious teams will use the series to tune-up for Rd. 1. We have all players coming along nicely preparing for Rd. 1 - so they will all be played during the praccy matches - just not all in the first one!! That's fine by me.Oh When the Saints wrote:Lyon said that every player will play in the pre-season games at some stage.Mr X from the West wrote:Richmond are going in with a full strength team. I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

In the past two years, Geelong have won a NAB Cup and then a Semi-Final. They are 6-1 in the pre-season over that period.yipper wrote:I want to see them get off to a flyer come round 1 in the AFL season - not do a Carlton and barnstorm their way through the practice matches!! I'd like to see us take it seriously, if as much for the fact that I honestly reckon those trips to the bush are - unfortunately - better saved for community camps rather than solid pre-season tune-ups.
In our 'best' recent year, 2004, we won the damn thing. Previous to 1997, our form in the pre-season was excellent, and we were runners up in 1998.
I believe in playing the best injury-free/have-completed-90%-of-the-pre-season-team you can in the first week.
By logical extension, that sees 25% of the list ruled out, leaving room for kids and second stringers to get a really good hitout.
I like RL's take on it: this isn't our best side, but we're in it to win it. As we should be.
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

Don't have a problem with any of that - and if RL is keen to have a crack, then all the better. But, I believe that the priority MUST be the main season and we not do anything to jeapodise our chances there. But, FWIW - I think that we have enough depth to actually field a decent team anyway and with Gehrig, Harvey likely starters anyway - the Tiges will still have their work cut out to win it with their "full strength" team.evertonfc wrote:In the past two years, Geelong have won a NAB Cup and then a Semi-Final. I totally agree! All these about being up and ready for round 1 crap going round this thread.Playing games and winning is the best preparation! Not the wrapping up in cotton wool treatment!Mr X from the West wrote:Richmond are going in with a full strength team. We are going in with a reserves team and will consequently lose.

If they start playing to early then they cannot do full training as the week is about recovery and then preparing for the next game. It may be more important to do some solid training than recovery work.iwantmeseats wrote:I totally agree! Geez, Plugger, love your stuff but for Christ's sake, is it not possible for our players to play a game of footy without spending the next three weeks in rehab? Do they all pull up lame after a bit of a trot, do they? Our boys should be able to play a game and be ready for the next week's game by Tuesday - if not, something is desperately wrong with them.plugger66 wrote:If they start playing to early then they cannot do full training as the week is about recovery and then preparing for the next game. Every player from every club does rehab after a games and then prepares for the next game. All I am saying it may be better for some guys to do extra training than preparing to a game that doesnt matter.Mr X from the West wrote:Geez, Plugger, love your stuff but for Christ's sake, is it not possible for our players to play a game of footy without spending the next three weeks in rehab? Plugger - I think you've hit the nail on the head about preparing for a game "...that doesn't matter".
The pre-season comp has gone from being a joke to a hilarious comedy routine. Nobody gives a stuff about it. The sooner the AFL wakes up and smells the roses and relegates it to the dustbin the better.

Why Geelong as the measuring stick evertonfc?
Sydney hadn't won a pre-season game in 3 years and they played off in two Grand Finals ...
There is no magic formula ... as long as you've got 20 out of your best 22 in the team come Round One, I don't think February really matters.

everton has raised a good point re those stupid bush praccy matches.......I really hope we (or other teams) aren't thinking "we wouldn't mind winning a few Nab crap games so we don't have to go bush" mentality.
IF that is happening, then the AFL seriously is deluded in their strategy, and should move praccy matches back to Melbourne.
The NAB series and bush series for the losers should all be about what's best for the clubs in their prep for round 1.
I wonder if the AFL have ever bothered asking the clubs how they'd like a pre-season comp (assuming we have to have one!) should operate as far as what the losing teams do?
Surely by assisting all clubs in getting to round 1 the best way they see fit makes for a better real season comp and enhances the whole product!!!
