Brilliant interview with Ross Lyon on 3AW
Just caught the end of the interview with Ross Lyon on 3AW. Did anyone listen to the whole interview and able to give us any update?
mod edit - one of the best interviews with an AFL senior coach I have ever heard ... Lyon is clear, sells the club well and is very informative for supporters, without giving a lot away.

I caught most of it when I was walking the dog.
Lyon was in a good mood. He was interviewed by Walls & Heally. My VERY loose version of events follow (don't quote me):
(Q) for question (R) for reply
Q: (Walls) What was the most important lesson learnt in your 1st season?
R: Not to get upset by journalist's questions & give them a mouthfull because they'll always get you back.
Q: How's the team travelling?
R: Very happy with pre-season draft. Happy to pick up King & C. Gardiner. He was probably ranked 23rd @ Geelong but with retirements of Hamill & Voss; similar body build etc. should fit in well with us as a replacement.
Q: Injuries have plagued the Saints in the past few seasons. How are you travelling now.
R: Very happy with our list & all players who are fit will play in intra-club hit out inc Gardy v King, Young bucks v established players.
Q: (Heally) Judd used Cousins as a mentore when he 1st went to the Eagles stating that he would be his shadow on the training track so that he could learn as much as possible. (Luckily he didn't shadow him off the field). Should younger players do the same by shadowing Harvey? (He referred to Armitage)
R: He could do a lot worse. (If Ross wasn't married, I'd have questions.) He marvelled at Harvey's work ethic & the way all of his teammates looked up to him. He loves the bloke. Harvey still finishes up near the top of the list at training.
Q: Luke Ball?
R: Training apart from the group apart from running. Did very well in a time trial beating home Lenny & Dal. Very confident that he will return to his best form.
Q: M. Gardiner
R: Doing everything asked at training
Q: Captaincy?
R: There are so many natural leaders down here that we may have to revert back to Thomo's (spit/chuck: my thoughts) style of rotating captains.
Several other topics were covered which I missed whilst buying the milk.

I once spent a year in Adelaide, I think it was on a Sunday.

listen yourselves
http://www.mytalk.com.au/aspx/pages/med ... dio&w=6392
link to find
"sports today with Gerard Healey On 3AW, replay in full, January 31st"
approx 28 min mark- slide the bar along to that point . out of 1.52.04
to 42. min
then they talked Cowboy and Gerard and his time in/near the animal cage.
Spoke of closing the training sessions and why;
window of opportunity to close sessions and work on skills and game plans
during the season 1 session per week will be open.

Commiserations saintbrat.
Hopefully 2008 will pickup for you.
I'm tipping a win next Friday to start the ball rolling
Just listened to the 3AW link.
Great interview.
Sounded very positive.
Especially the bits about Ball, King and Gardiner.
The legend of Harvey continues to grow - love how Lyon says Harves has a plan of what he is going to do/work on before every training session, and is mentally the the toughest most dedicated player he has seen.
What a great acolode.
Have separately read that Harvey tries to improve himself in some way at every training session.
Lets hope that dedication rubs off on a few others.
The Healey animal pit bit was a bit weak.
His recollection of the Carmen/Young shootout was a bit off the mark.
Carmen kicked 11 to George's 8 (not the "14 or so" that Healey recalled).
But yes it still remains for me as the best losing H&A game I have seen.
Thanks for the link.
And thanks for all your great work.
And condolances again.

Lyon said he is now a "real St Kilda" man ... "it's important to win the first one, get some momentum, first half of the year wants to get some wins on the board and get them on early, so it'll be on for young and old".
They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.
i'm sorry to here that...saintbrat wrote:sorry linz been a bit busy - my mum passed away this week

Thank you all for your condolances- My mum had survived several surgeries over the last few years but finally went very quickly. Too tired
I am now supporting- 'lil brat=brats'- who unfortunately has also just today lost her other grandma- So a very tough time for my sister and family.
so the distraction of the team in town is more than welcome- hope I can fit it all in.
PS the link for 3AW is amongst the media links stickied above
just wish SEN had a better review/ replay. podcast system- what they do have isn't dated or named easily. and not put up in any order or within time.

Pity Blight couldn't say the same when he took the job.
I'll rephrase what I said in the locked* thread :
Much better. No sane person would deny GT left the team in far better shape in this regard than when he started.

His fitness has always been good. He can run at a moderate pace in a straight line for a long time. However that isnt what a good fotballer needs to do and he still isn't participating in main training.
If he was kicking footys 50m with no pain, quickly and comfortably changing direction and beating others in 20m sprints then that would be very encouraging. What we're hearing now is the same thing we've heard every year since 2005.
No argument that GT left the Saints with much better playing group leadership.JeffDunne wrote:Interesting.linz wrote:Q: Captaincy?

Lance or James??
There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>.
