... The journo's don't have a clue whats happening around the clubs and couldn't give a toss either. Need a story! - "why don't we ask Nick Riewoldt again about going back to the Gold Coast? ... thats a question isn't it?"

What can Nick think ... "I can't say outright 'I will never go there' because cause of the folks ... I guess I'll just have to tell them the same as I told the last 50 journo's that have asked that question."

Roo is concentarting on a Premiership at our club - not thinking about the Gold Coast.

Sometimes I think we should just line the journo's up and ...

YET AGAIN, I still see no issue or nothing that indicates cause for concern.

Journalists are constantly looking for "bites' & frankly they're getting stuff all.

I urge all saints fans, stop with the f**king paranoia already.

we should send the journo's to a very dodgy curry joint along with the whole Indian cricket side!

Well what he says supposedly, is in quotes , so I take it as said.

It says to me, we win flag , he goes...no question. If that is what he actually said, its almost gaureenteed, sadly.

I struggle to understand that. If wewon the flag next year, I would still very much care if we kept reiwoldt or anyon else. Statements like that make no sense.

Flag is won, now what the hell, the team can fall apart, whatever....what is that about?

On the contrary, i think the captaincy would only strengthen Nick's ties to the club.
However, don't think it would be a big issue.
If i was to pick a player who enjoyed more than any other their time at St Kilda with his mates, Riewoldt would have to be it.

Im with you. If anyone here could guarantee a flag and then we lose Rooy I would take it in a heartbeat. Firstly we have won one flag in 110 years and secondly losing any player isnt end of a club. Look at Plugger when he left.

I'd love Nick to stay, but if he wins us a flag he can do whatever floats his proverbial boat.
It'll be his loss when we win again the next year.

Saying the right things to not offend the Gold Coast local journalists is how I read it.

I read it quite positively but if the rest of you quiver & tremble & stress about little issues like this then by all means be my guest.

He's basically committed himself to our footy club until at least 2011.

It will be a long 3 seasons if you want to spend every waking moment stressing out over whether he will leave our club one day.

Pure journalistic dross. Space filler on a slow news day. The Carey thing has no new angles and no WCE or cats players have breached social standards or laws in the past 48 hours so they need something to fill their word quota.

another article on the same subject...

"Gold Coast AFL team pushed back to 2011

January 31, 2008 - 6:08PM

The AFL's plan to have a team playing on the Gold Coast has been pushed back another year until 2011.

The AFL initially slated a Gold Coast-based 17th franchise to be part of the 2010 premiership after the Kangaroos rejected a $100 million proposal to relocate to Australia's sixth-largest city.

But with AFL broadcasting and commercial operations manager Gillon McLachlan saying the licence would be awarded to a consortium by the end of this year, he conceded an additional 12 months is required for the new club to be built from scratch.

"I think that a licence would need somewhere in the order of two years once it was awarded to get organised and set up for the bounce of the ball," McLachlan told reporters at the launch of the AFL's 2008 Gold Coast program.

"That's when we start talking about 2011."

The AFL's failure to secure a deal to redevelop Carrara Stadium remains a key stumbling block for a new team, which also requires the approval of at least five of the 16 existing clubs.

"We'll continue to work with the stakeholders to try and get a stadium up," said McLachlan.

"We cannot have a team up here without a stadium and we've said that consistently.

"It's a big part of the puzzle."

McLachlan said the proposal for a Gold Coast-based team would be rubber-stamped at the AFL Commission's next meeting in mid February.

By the end of March an announcement will be made on the process and criteria for awarding the 17th licence.

McLachlan rejected accusations the AFL had been dragging the chain in keeping Gold Coast people informed about its plans for a new team.

"It's entirely fair and reasonable given the Kangaroos late in the year decided they weren't going to come (to the Gold Coast) and that's a decision for their board," he said.

"Now we've worked up another plan and I think the actual timing is pretty quick.

"If the Gold Coast is getting impatient then please, I'd like to say we're working productively through it."

McLachlan said the AFL was confident the 16 clubs would support the introduction of a Gold Coast team, which would be given draft concessions and salary cap allowances to ensure its competitiveness from the outset.

St Kilda co-captain and Gold Coast product Nick Riewoldt, who attended Thursday's launch, would be a prime target for the new team but the star forward, while not ruling out a move back home, said he remained focus on winning a premiership for the Saints.

"I'm not going to rest until St Kilda wins a premiership and supporters don't have anything to worry about as far as that goes," said Riewoldt, who recently re-signed with the club until the end of 2010.

McLachlan said there was plenty of interest from the business community in setting up a Gold Coast AFL team, which is certain to receive heavy financial backing from Riewoldt's old club Southport Sharks.

But he warned the proposed venture would need support from government, the corporate sector and the public to succeed.

"AFL teams turn over an average $30 million. They're big business," McLachlan noted.

"For a licence to work, we need everyone behind it.

"That's why we can't go from the Kangaroos to a 17th licence overnight. We're working up the plan."

even if we do lets say in 2010...and he does go...we will still get something damn good for him in return...he would be what...28-29???

in the prime of his career as he has been for the past few years now...

if we get a flag then everything will get sorted...it would be a shame for him to go...

3 seasons is an eternity away...who knows if we win one this year or next...roo will want to acheive the same success with the same core again???

i dont see him or any of the other guns around that age seemingly buggering off once the job gets done once
