i was watching the 66 gf before and in the first or second quarter you see john bingley manned up on des tuddenham and one of the commentators says he is a good tagger and a tough fellow and i immediatly thought of steven baker of course i never saw him play except in this game but i have seen others like the doc, stewie and big carl and i have my comparrisons between them and players today and i was just wondering would steven baker and john bingley be a fair comparrison?

came home after 'our' flag ....coached clarence (my mum's side) to their first flag

was / is a bit of a legend in tassy ......tough as old nails

I don't think so. Although they used the term 'tagger' in those days it meant nothing more than a 'run with' player.

After his playing days John went on to have a very successful career in business and his 3 sons took his business over. A lot of the merchandise supplied through the AFL is produced by them and most of the membership' packs provided by the Saints is also supplied by them.

John unfortunately suffered health problems and has been for some time, I believe, in a wheelchair.

One of his sons, Darren I think, played reserves footy for us?

oh im sorry to hear that looked a great player and a decent bloke oh well thanks for helping me i just like to have my comparisons

Baring in mind the different types of game from one era to now - Bakes and Bingley are / were similar. John Bingley was a bigger version of Bakes. A tagger in 66 is vastly different to a tagger in 2008 - however, Bingley was given the job of curbing the influence of brilliant players. Allan Jeans was before his time as a coach.

in the second semi , tuddy, the filth captain tore us to pieces.....so in the grand final the saints picked bingley for his tagging abilities.....we won....and tuddy wasn't nearly as effective....

...i got to met des a few years later...a good few years.....told him that i believed that bingleys blanketing of him was one of the factors in us winning our first flag....des was far from complimentary about our john...didn't agree with me......'course he wouldn't.though, would he???......said that bingley was a real arsehole and that before the game, he went to shake his hand...bingley spat in his face, according to des.....

winners are grinners though......

..i could tell you a lot of stories about bingley.....including the one when he punched the opposing captain in an intra league match......whist the national anthem was being played....

...is baker like bingley?????

Sting, I met John Bingley plenty of times at the footy - particularly back in the Waverley Park days - he always reckoned he was just a tough player who did the dirty jobs!!

Given what you have written - maybe the similarity with Bakes is not so close. But then again - Bakes will throw a cut lunch if it means helping us win!!

No, Harves doesn't own that store any more.

That store, along with some others (Southland, Highpoint), is owned by one of John's sons

I think that Harves only owns, in partnership with Sammy and Warnie, the Harvey Hammil Warne store.
