Most Valuable Players That Have Departed......

Post: # 506013Post TimeToShineFellas »

I was watching the updated DVD "Heaven And Hell" last night (as you do on a Friday night when unwinding from work) and a few things I noticed were the players that have left us and went on to other Clubs and were more than serviceable or afforded "champion" status at other Clubs.

I would have had in my top 5 (in no particular order)

Ian Stewart to Richmond
Russell Greene to Hawthorn
Tony Lockett to Sydney
Carl Ditterich to Melbourne (and back to St Kilda), and
Barry Hall to Sydney

Can anyone think of any others.......?

Val Perovic was a big loss at the time.

In some ways Gary Sidebottom was a critical loss. Fantastic 1978 and 1979 but lost all form in 1980 when made Captain. Missed the bus at Geelong and was serviceable at Fitzroy.

Stuart Trott ended up at Hawthorn but this was a bit before my time and I do not know how big a loss he was.

Dean Rice was a killer loss - no loyalty shown by St Kilda to a fearless player.

As indicated earlier Matty Carr was another serious loss. You tend not to notice him cos he is at Freo but we lost him just when he came good.

Nobody going to bring up the Cain Ackland Blues? :)

I remember being miffed at Knobel for getting ahead of himself, I honestly believe that if he'd stayed a Saint, he could have become the player he thought he was... but sure enough, the tap ruckman with no target to tap to, who ran like a knee injury waiting to happen, turned into a b grade injured ruckman with dodgy knees.

But that's recent guys who I suppose I can agree don't quite make that top 5 list. :D

IMO Barry Hall to the swans wasn't that big a loss, he was never going to reach his potential with us IMO and in the process we got Dal...

Lockett & Stewart would be in the top 3 to ever play for StKFC (Harvey being the other).

There is one that seems to have slipped under everbody's radar;

JAYSON DANIELS (Jack) went from Saints to Syd and back again. Was the best player ever........who couldn't kick, couldn't mark, couldn't handball   !!

Yes st_Trav

In recent times I think Heath Black was a big loss -

(that's not allowing for the internal issues amongst players - which could have turned into something highly devisive)...

He was someone the other teams needed to counter as he was a mid-fielder that they HAD to tag.

Dal and Lenny have copped a lot more attention since his departure...

Nicky Winmar

I will never forgive the club for giving him the arse.

A bit before my time, Roy Cazaly.

Winmar is a difficult one - clearly an out and out champion but a tormented character. Did not do the team much good in the final against Melbourne in 1998 when he lost his marbles. I seem to remember him attacking Daryl Wakelin at one stage....and Daryl played for us at this time!!!!

I suspect (much like Ian Stewart) the St Kilda Management had fought for years to keep him under some sort of control. I think it was Timmid that actually decided to make a statement upon his glorious appointment as coach for 1999 and gave Nicky the flick. Sometimes you have to finally put down your foot with these wayward characters even if they are clearly still champions. You can't keep having rules of discipline then not apply them to special cases (unless you are Gary Ablett Senior). Still, I take your point and it hurt like hell to see Nicky in a Bulldogs jumper. I suspect he did not like it one bit either.....no winners here.

In any case, you can blame Mr Watson who make a fine sports reporter!!!!?!

Tim Watson was behind Winmar and Lappin leaving the club. He didnt want players causing him grief in his 1st year of coaching, and those two were ones who in the previous season had caused a bit of trouble. Both could play but he deemed them to hard to handle, so got rid of them,
