Umpires !!

Post: # 505599Post Eastern »

I have watched Harv's 350th game v West Coast a few times over the off-season and my thoughts eventually turned to the umpiring.

The free kicks for that game were something like 29-19 in our favor, but there quite a few dodgy decisions either way.

It appeared that whenever there was a 50-50 in our favor or a dodgy decision in our favor the umpire was Darren Goldspink. Whenever it was a 50-50 or dodgy favoring West Coast the umpire was Matthew Head. The other umpire (No 24) went largely un-noticed.

It would seem a shame that Goldy has retired and Head is still umpiring

Note: Head was involved in the "Whispers in the sky" saga !!

It is an interesting point nonetheless how we all feel there is one umpire that gives us a raw deal consistently....

Ours used to be Kevin Smith and Glenn James, oh and John Russo. Nowadays - McLaren - think he gives everyone the s***s amd McBurney. With Goldspunk a close 3rd.

i dislike that shrimp guy whatever his name is - he was knocked off his feet a few times this year...just cant think of his name

and matt stevic - he was a stand in teacher at my school for a while and he confirmed my thoughts that umpires are as big of a dickheads off the field as they are on

I'm guessing ur referring to Ray Chambelrain. Comes across as a little annoying bastard I must say.

That is a fair enough point, I also heard that they were talking about bringing in a new rule, whenever there is a deliberately rushed behind the team will get a behind but there will then be a ball up in the square instead of a kick out, when will the AFL learn, the less the rules are up for interpretation the easier life will be for the players, umps and fans...

Mclaren and Mcburney give me the irrits.

Goldspink has been about 50/50 and same with Chamberlain in terms of controversial decisions.

McLaren, McBurney, and Chamberlain are the wicked trio.

That has got to be the worst rule ever...it kinda defeats the purpose of the rushed behind...hope that never gets played into action...i remember the saints vs pies match where saints conceded like 5 rushed behinds in 1 quarter or something...that was awfull...

edit: ok, i reread it, and misinterpreted the centre square for the goal squares. so it doesnt come across as bad rules as i though before...nevertheless, hope it doesnt come into action.

I'm not sure how you interpreted it Andy, but the ball up would be in the goal square, not the centre square...

Don Jolley umpired in the 60's!!

Glen James was a good umpire. Of today I'm ok with Goldspink, Allen and James.
