In good Nick, Saints fighting fit

December 12, 2007 ST KILDA star Nick Dal Santo says the players are showing greater accountability for their fitness as they seek a head start for season 2008.
Dal Santo admitted the Saints' fitness last season was not at the level it should be and the players had taken it upon themselves to lift their work rate this summer.
"We needed to change a few things and I think that was driven by the players," Dal Santo said.
"We have taken some actions during the off-season break to come back in good shape.
"And also the way we have trained over the past several weeks of pre-season to get ourselves in as good a shape as we can be."
The Saints have earned a reputation as the league's most injury-prone side in recent years, but hope the recruitment of new fitness boss David Misson will turn their fortunes around.
Misson has spent the past seven years working with the Sydney Swans, who have been considered the benchmark for durability in the AFL.
"I think the boys are training definitely a lot harder than we were last year," Dal Santo said.
"Everything is really positive at the moment."
Fellow Saints midfielder Lenny Hayes said the playing group felt confident about its prospects for next season after missing the finals this year.
"It was really disappointing the way the year ended up," Hayes said.
"But a lot of things have happened over the last couple of months and there is a great buzz and feel around the place and a quiet confidence that we can do big things this year."
Hayes said veteran forward Fraser Gehrig looked in good shape after slotting straight back into the fold at Moorabbin.
"It was like he has never gone," Hayes said.

only mention of saints sponsorship deal was a small piece on--- you guessed it 'window of opportunity' or was it 'doors' on the pulse page.
