Southport have 40,000 members... that's massive however the membership costs $5 a year and has about 20 offers coupled with it, most of them revolving around the pokies and venue they have.

I wish this point would sink in to people (especially at BF) it's like charging everyone who walks in to moorabin to play pokies $5 and claiming them as 'members' for the next 12 monts.

I'd love to know the average turn out to their games and see if it actually competes with the SANFL, WAFL or VFL, somehow I can't imagine it being much more than a thousand a match if even

I think southport played off in the GF this year and I heard figures of about 4000, having said that though, Australians crave sport at THE HIGHEST level regardless of the sport. So that would be an attraction. But at the same time, they are hated by all other clubs, similar to Port Adeladie, except PA had 120+ years in a footballing state to build a supporter base.

Unless Southport can put a plan to the AFL where they get minimal funding in comparison to a new franchise yet still succeed, I think they can kiss there chances goodbye.

But they have publicly stated on many occasions that they want to play in the national competition. They may have missed the boat by about 10 years (football structure wise)

I wouldn't mind seeing them get a chance, they have dome all the hard work so far, and for that they deserve an opportunity. but it will be an uphill battle

The AFL need to work out the stadium deal before they grant a new license, how can Carrara support an AFL side?

But why stop there ? What about Cairns, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin, Mount Gambier ?

That brings it up to 25.

So in your lifetime you might see your team win 4 premierships if you live to 100. Of course you will be too young to remember the first and have dementia for the fourth. But at least you will enjoy the 2nd and 3rd. That's assuming we win one every 25 years rather than finding the competition dominated by more powerful and favoured interstate clubs.
In that case you might be lucky to see one.
Thanks for making up the numbers. The solution is NOT more clubs.
The solution is to geographically spread the current clubs out more evenly.
I think that is behind Dimwit's talk of a 17th and 18th club. He is trying to speed up the inevitable process. Trying to bully North and the Dogs to move now, because if you don't the offer won't be on the table.

top post enrico. right on the money.

more teams would be a disaster for the competition and will mean less of a chance of seeing another st kilda premiership.

the roos should have taken up the offer. their long-term alternative is ceasing to exist.

well its because andrew demetriou is an idiot.

you have several hundred thousand taswegians down there who are die hard footy fans.

why would anyone think that was football country

then again the prostitutes in the gold coast are tanned and the drugs are cheaper, given the historic choice of death by some AFL commissioners.

That area is perfect for a second team and will help in finally destroying that rubbish known as rugby league.
I posted on here about a week ago (on the roos to goldcoast thread) that the AFL plan to relocate the bulldogs to West Sydney . They had an agreement in principle with Smorgan when the dogs were unviable and broke and the league bailed the out for 10 million , on the premise they would relocate in the future, if my memory is correct it was to be by 2012. That's why kept the "Western" Bulldogs name.
This came out by a phone call to 3LO one Saturday several years ago, from a guy (I forget his name) claiming to be a Doggies past player representatve (president of the past players if I recall?) who said he had seen the document on Smorgans desk. Smorgan denied the document existed, but the old fellow was relieved from his position at the doggies.....
The AFL have always had a plan to have two teams in Queensland and two in Sydney once they believe the states can support two teams.

And the president said " I did not have sex with that woman"
And our former president said " Football is like golf" 

Go Sainters !!!!!
