John Beveridge - His Words on the Draftees of 07 and 06

Post: # 498664Post SaintBot »

First time we have drafted a ruckman with an early pick since the Draft started. Ben McEvoy has good endurance ,which is a big advantage for a ruckman ,excellent overhead mark.

We have chosen 2 17 year olds with 42 and 70. Back to last year ,Ross has no expectation of newly drafted players playing seniors in their 1st year and we must always reserve judgment for considerable time.

Jack Steven ,a bustling hard at it midfielder, who looks the type who can play small forward at times.

Eljay Connors ,Light, quick left footer ,wing ,half forward, lasted till pick 70 as he had a collapsed lung during May,which has been fixed by a simple minor operation,Doctors advise a very common occurrence with lean tallish athletic lads.

Two rookies onto main list ,Jarryn Geary and Clint Jones ,both going along nicely

3 retained Rookies ,Jayden Attard, who would have gone up if he hadn,t torn his ACL.

Robert Eddy, who is our best endurance runner

Luke van Rheenen 201 cm ruckman

Jarryd Allen ,as you know ,dislocated his elbow and missed 16 weeks, has played most of his football as a forward, but gives the impression that he could be a key position defender.

We are looking at a fairly wide field for our rookie draft, just because we have players training with us doesn,t mean that we will necessarily select them.

Very interesting, I can see he and Maguire taking CHB and FB depending on opponents.

i had a quick chat to bevo at training last friday only to suddenly think when i went home how stupid i was to not ask him about his recent selections

so i emailed him with a few questions and he has responded promptly...allen was the most intersting quote for me as well, i really have no idea now of where he will end up on the field...i do however have no doubt he will make the field, whether it be in one or two years is my question

at training on friday Eddy was so far above the rest of the core group (consisting of around 15 players) in terms of endurance...geary kept up with him for the first run of a bit over 400m but after that eddy just took off, finishing first in each run by over 35m

Thanks for the report Saintbot. Looks like we've got a fairly promising development group.

I'll state this now - Robert Eddy will be better than Armitage.

Feel free to quote me on this in 12 years when they have both played out their careers.

Yeah, it was more of a comment of Eddy than Armitage.

Great read, thanks SaintBot.

I remember watching Allen in the Kangaroos practice match at Optus before last season and thought that he moves very well. I like the idea that the club believes he's adaptable to either end of the ground. Very good for us we have a key position (fwd/back) U/18 AA on our list and still to be unveilled.

Thanks for that SaintBot. Great work.

I like the sound of Eddy. Hopefully he can put in some strong performances for Casey this year (and with that sort of fitness base he should be able to).

Interesting to see that RL has little expectation of draftees ... up at the Swans, they used to hang on to their draftees for 3 and 4 years without them even playing a game.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.
