homework, back in those days, drafting was like playing lotto.
You heard a few good things from a mate about a bloke playing somewhere up in the country, and took him with your first pick.
It was largely guesswork, and clubs did not have the full-time or even part-time recruiters they have now.
James Hird was taken with a pick in the 70's ... Chris Grant with the last pick in the draft ...
All clubs stuffed up. Richmond took a bloke at #1 who played about 5 games.
Sheldon probably handled it himself, and his draft/trading record as coach was part of the reason he was sacked.
It wasn't until the mid 90's that drafting started to become more accurate and clubs had recruiters on staff.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

I agree that there was some guesswork but there was a lot of rorting and hiding players in those daysOh When the Saints wrote:homework, back in those days, drafting was like playing lotto.

The guy who was the Footscray talent scout (who recruited Grant) was on SEN a few weeks ago and stated that after he was told about Grant and went to see him play with Daylsford. Footscray hid Grant by stopping him playing in the league altogether as they realised he would go as a number one pick. The recruiter said it was very common in those days.
On a personal level I had a very talented mate who did some pre season with Carlton back in the seventies (but had a dodgy knees at 18 years of age) , Carlscum paid him a large amount of money (yes in a brown paper bag !!!) not to sign for any other club for three years in case his knees came good..(they did not but the guy ended up a bit of a legend in the VFA as he could not train due to the chronic arthritis, he only turned up to play and kicked bags of goals).
And the president said " I did not have sex with that woman"
And our former president said " Football is like golf"
Go Sainters !!!!!
