Robert Harvey's 21st year of AFL footy
Below is from the 2008 Membership Brochure, and I think it's worth posting on here (sorry if it's already been done!)......very well written, almost inspiring......
Harvey’s 21 years
When Robert Harvey runs out
in early March, he will become the first
player to play 21 consecutive seasons. He will be
the only current player to have played in both the VFL
and AFL eras. And he will be almost 20 years older than
some of St Kilda’s new draftees.
While AFL statistics show that the average AFL career spans a mere four years,
Harvey has managed to play 359 games, win two Brownlow medals (including
Players Association Award. What makes Harvey so special is that with all these
achievements under his belt, he has chosen to return for a 21st and record
breaking season because he knows that he can still contribute to the St Kilda
team in 2008.
When Harvey begins his 21st pre-season it will be his determination, his work
ethic and his commitment that will again see him on the field in 2008. Stories of
coaches having to physically remove Harvey from the training track, explain how
through backbreaking hard work, he has managed to keep himself performing
at the highest level. Harvey’s ability to find the footy in traffic, break tackles, and
deliver to a teammate is amazing, but it is his capacity to make so many contests
that sets him apart. The image of Harvey on his haunches, exhausted at the end
of each game is common enough. He gives everything he has for St Kilda every
time he walks onto the ground.
Harvey has shown his commitment, now it is time to show yours. He is one player
among 22 that take to the field, and you are one member among 31,000 that make
this club. Everyone needs to play their part.
Together we are one.

It may not be a good thing to do but dammit, it's affective...riccardo wrote:Nice. Apart from the last paragraph, which is a poorly disguised emotive attempt at getting membership renewals.
Memo to the club: Don't use our greatest ever player like a marketing tool, its not amusing.
I am going to send that to everyone of my part time St.Kilda supporting friends...

Riccardo, that's the whole point of the exercise: to try to secure membership. It's a bit rich to applaud the article but chastise its underlying purpose. Without that purpose, the article would likely not exist.
If you don't like our players being used as marketing tools, tough titties. Footballers have been used as sponsorship tools for all number of products for the best part of the past 60 years! What is more appropriate than using them to promote the football club for which they play?

You can appreciate something for its aestetic value and dislike the motive behind it. That is what I choose to do with the above. Just because I find the alterior motive distastful dosen't mean the piece wasn't well written or the author didn'tswork hard on it.

That is fair enough IMO, especially someone as humble as Harves, while I don't mind I can definitely see where you are coming from, but if it works, I think it would be worth it...riccardo wrote:Why is that so?Riewoldting wrote:Riccardo, that's the whole point of the exercise: to try to secure membership. affect = verb (doing word - used with action e.g. The game affected his career)Armoooo wrote:It may not be a good thing to do but dammit, it's affective...riccardo wrote:Nice. Apart from the last paragraph, which is a poorly disguised emotive attempt at getting membership renewals.

effect = noun (subject or object - e.g. The effect of that game was to end his career)
Although to confuse you, effect can also be a verb meaning to procure or bring about.
They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Lol, I've always had trouble with those two, but even from your description I'm still confused...Oh When the Saints wrote:affect = verb (doing word - used with action e.g. The game affected his career)Armoooo wrote:It may not be a good thing to do but dammit, it's affective...riccardo wrote:Nice. I would have thought the way I used it was an adverb

Re: Robert Harvey's 21st year of AFL footy
The other thing, that IMO makes him special is that he's truly humble enough not to be worrying about his legacy, but about trying to win a premiership. He gets regularly underrated against "contemporaries" Hird, Buckley etc... in '97 the man had 40 possessions BOG in a prelim final. In '98 he was better than in '97. He was Chris Judd 10 years ago.saintspremiers wrote: While AFL statistics show that the average AFL career spans a mere four years,

In todays AFL, the great players generally don't hold on until someone can beat them for their spot, they retire when they could still contibute, but the fickle memory won't retain them at their peak in that case. I'm not dissing any of the retirees, that's the word they get from media and fans - don't hold on, retire at your peak, instead of playing until you can't play anymore. When Tuck finally hung them up after more than 400 games, it took a tap on the shoulder and word from the coach to make it happen - he thought he had one more year.
To play on contributing at a mere above average level instead of comfortably moving into the past greats category is what in my mind makes Harvey the easy choice as best Saint of all time.
Anyway, rant off, back on subject, it doesn’t affect me in the slightest when the word effect is used wrong, but makes me crazy when people write “orientatedâ€

It does annoy me when people forget about how good Harvey was back then, he was a better player than Judd is now...
I think 20 years down the track people will realize just how great Harvey is, flag or no flag....
As for his BOG in the Prelim, don't forget about his BOG in the gf too, just because he didn't get the Norm Smith doesn't mean he wasn't best on, his 38 or so touches are even more impressive than the fact he kept his opponent to less than 15....
In 1998 Robert Harvey averaged 30.6 touches and 3 marks, the best Judd has ever managed to do is 26, in that same season Harvey averaged 21, this season Judd averaged 23 to Harvey's 21.
Judd also had the luxury of having Kerr, Cousins and Embley to share the load... He was also working with one of the best ruckman ever in Cox...
Harvey at his best >>>>>>>>. Judd at his best, Judd at his best >> Harvey the last few years....

Harvey is no doubt a champion, but you cannot possible bag Judd.the game is different now than when Harvey was at his peak. More professional now than ever. Judd, to be honest is a little better than Harvey at his peak. Not much though. Judd is a more effective kick and better use of the football and kicks more goals. HArvey, well he is the best side stepper the game has ever seen and his evasive skills, also the best I have ever seen. Judd, I think has the more overall package, assuming both at their peaks. Both champions. One major thing you play for=Premiership. Judd has one, banger doesn't. Could of gone to Carlton and played in the 95 premiership.

Judd will only ever have one premiership if he stays at Carltoon.
But he may well get a wooden spoon also!
