about there are two i disagree with is goddard. I rate him above everyone listed above him.
Wells, maleski, selwood, even mcintosh who has basically had 1 season in the sun while goddard has basically had a good season every year up until his injury.
Ball would go top 10 even on his injured form, on his 05, back of 06 form, top 5.
but thats a matter of opinion.

If nothing else, I think this list shows that we've had a better draft record than some here would suggest.
Yeah, OK, maybe in hindsight you'd take Judd over Ball and Bartel over X.Clarke.
But according to Robbo we got the best player out of 1998 (L.Hayes at pick 11) and the best out of 2003 (Sam Fisher at 50+), not to mention the only team to categorically get a no. 1 pick right with Riewoldt.
Adam Hunter instead of Caydn Beetham would have been a great get though.

also the threw in a mention of maguire and montagna and a few others as well.
caydn beetham had talent, I wonder if we had a coach other than timmid would we have seen better of him?
who knows. certainly timmid saw off a fair amount of talent at st kilda in return for delany, monkey, francis amongst others.

If you look at our drafting we have been more successful than almost any other club but we only seem to get our players from one avenue, we haven't used the rookie list anywhere near enough.
As for O'Keefe, he is a superstar, no doubt about it.

well st kilda had to tighten its belt ascross the board, and I dont blame butterss for limiting access to funds there.Armoooo wrote:If you look at our drafting we have been more successful than almost any other club but we only seem to get our players from one avenue, we haven't used the rookie list anywhere near enough.

the AFL funding rookies is a great step forward for development IMO.

Completely agree it will be great to see us developing some solid young players from the rookies, I'm not expecting a Cox, Sandilands or Kirk anytime soon but it would still be nice to pick up a few good contributors to fill out the bottom 6 or maybe use for depth...Dan Warna wrote:well st kilda had to tighten its belt ascross the board, and I dont blame butterss for limiting access to funds there.Armoooo wrote:If you look at our drafting we have been more successful than almost any other club but we only seem to get our players from one avenue, we haven't used the rookie list anywhere near enough.

Goddard should definitely be higher than he is.
O'Keefe is (dual?) All-Australian and premiership player.
But BJ is better than Malceski and Selwood by a fair margin.
And as if Hodge is better than Gary Ablett !! Lost all credibility right there.
On 04/05 form, Luke Ball would be Top 5.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.
the back half of 06 was pretty good too, i htink in the last 12 games he was beaten maybe once? maybe twice? playing right in the guts.Oh When the Saints wrote:Goddard should definitely be higher than he is.

hodge is pretty good, definately top 5 material but yablett clearly ahead.Oh When the Saints wrote:Agree ... although '05 was his best year.
Can't believe he put Hodge higher than Ablett Jnr though. Hodge is a spud.

I thought it was a pretty good article.
I only disagree with BJ, I still see him as #1 from that draft.
There were a couple in the wrong order but overall pretty good.
Really highlighted the value of the rookie list!

Story written by Melbourne based journo Mark Robinson for the Herald Sun. Robbo is an Essendon fan and he gave them a decent whack around the ears. I thought it was a pretty well balanced article !!st_Trav_ofWA wrote:the story lost all credibility right there stupid sydney newspaperMillions of dollars are spent and thousands of hours worked as 16 club recruiters and their helpers search for the next James Hird, Simon Black and Ryan O'Keefe.

i can't guarantee it, but aussie jones, james hird, chris grant, aaron hamill come to mind for players picked late.
i guess its the reverse of early draft picks that fail.

Yeah I really think that late picks should be appluaded more than early duds should be criticized, because think about it, the recruiters pick the best players available, just because they were the best in the under 18's doesn't mean they're going to improve as much as the others, there are also other things to take into account such as determination and work ethic etc. Everyone is a recruiting mastermind in hindsight but what takes real skill is being able to spot potential where no one else could and that is what happened with Milne, Cox, Sandilands, Hird, Kirk, Westhoff, S. Fisher and Aussie etc.Dan Warna wrote:theres a list someone did on BF on late football picks. The Saintsational Man wrote:We have some very talented blokes on our list ladies and gentlemen.....
