Nine Thousand One Hundred and Forty Nine
How many possessions has Robert Harvey had ?
9149
A prev thread somewhere posed the question - "Will Harvey reach 10,000 possessions?".
Well to answer that you need to know how many possessions he has had.
The Rleague site shows that Harvey has had 8393 disposals from 1991-2007 (325 games).
If we accept that as gospel then how many disposals did he have in his previous 34 games?
For those games there is no on-line data.
To get the answer I asked Kevin Taylor from the "Footstats" site - a really excellent site.
Whilst data from this period is not online he did some digging and came up with ....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Source - *1988 and 1989 Ray Young Stats, then 1990 and 1991 from the Gaumont series*..
Harvey over the years of 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991 is totalled as:
Year 1988 89 90 91
Games: 4 12 18 23
Kicks: 41 136 250 318
Marks: 7 42 46 66
Handballs: 15 121 193 298
Possessions 56 257 443 616
Cumulative 56 313 756 1372
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So if we take the 756 possessions from 88-90 and add to 8393 from 91-07 we get 9149.
Note - as with all things statistical different sources give different answers.
eg the above "manual" data shows that for 1991 he had 616 possessions whereas the Rleague site shows 605 possessions in 1991.
So whilst the 9149 figure may still be disputed, it is at least justifiable.
And it should stand till an "official" AFL figure is published.
Implications ?
It means that he has averaged 25.5 possessions per game in his 359 game career - just amazing.
It certainly puts him in number 1 spot (with KB probably in second spot),
But can he make 10,000 ?
Well to do so would mean he would have to average almost 40 possessions and play all games in 2008 to hit 10,000.
More realistically he will probably get somewhere between 9500 and 9700.
And set an impossible target for those to follow.

He manually extracted data from the quoted references for those years.Mr Magic wrote:Given that there seems to be some discrepancy between the AFL's official stats and your source, at least for season 1991, why not ask your source what his total for Harvey is?
Maybe his figure is closer to 9500 in total, which would make the 10,000 possible?
It is interesting that there are often big discrepancies between sources.
Often hear commentators say someone had twenty possessions but in the paper the next day it might be 18 or 22.
Who do you believe ?

Harvey has played 359 of a possible 434 matches (83%).Enrico_Misso wrote:But can he make 10,000 ?

And set an impossible target for those to follow.
Assuming that St Kilda plays three finals in each of 2008 and 2009, there are 50 possible matches for Harvey to play in over the next two seasons. At 83%, he should play 41 of those 50 matches.
If Harvey averages 20.5 possessions over those 41 matches - almost 20% less than he has averaged per match over his career - he should pick up his 10,000th possession in the closing minutes of his 400th and final match, the 2009 winning St Kilda Grand Final.
I fail to see the problem.
