West Coast leaves AFL painful choices
IN isolation there is nothing wrong with Daniel Kerr staggering around the Gold Coast's Indy Festival seemingly drunk, as he appeared to be on Friday afternoon.
In effect, it is another AFL footballer letting his hair down in the off-season.
But the reality is that it encapsulates West Coast's continual thumbing of its nose at the AFL and authority in general.
If there was a week for the Eagle players to keep their heads down in the wake of the Chick/Cousins catastrophe this was it.
Instead nothing much changes - the AFL keeps issuing what seem to be hollow warnings, the Eagles keep pledging to stamp out their drug culture and the hits keep coming.
AFL chief Andrew Demetriou says any penalties for the Eagles will be discussed at a commission meeting on November 19, but the suspicion is West Coast will again dodge any meaningful sanction.
Perhaps it is time for the AFL to get its hands dirty and actually punish West Coast, even if it has begun to reform its drug-fuelled culture. The softly softly approach clearly isn't working.
The AFL's rule 1.6 refers to bringing the game into disrepute - not attempting not to bring the game into disrepute.
The intent is largely irrelevant. You either do or you don't drag the brand into the gutter.
By any measure Ben Cousins's behaviour has been questionable - he is accused of refusing a police blood test - which could be seen to be bringing the game into disrepute. Remember that in sport, refusing a drugs test should bring the same penalty as a positive test.
On Sunday, April 29, the commission told the Eagles any "future serious player infringements" would be met with premiership points deductions, draft pick removals, heavy fines and/or player suspensions.
How do this week's events not constitute a serious infringement, regardless of the dropped drug charge for Cousins?
There is no middle ground.
Either the Eagles are punished for bringing the game into disrepute or the AFL is seen to be issuing idle threats. We respect the commission too much to accuse it of that.
But if the Eagles are hit with the wet lettuce again, how else can we interpret it?
The Eagles keep saying they have done everything they can.
Then why was Cousins not issued with a minder or something comparable in the days after Chris Mainwaring's death?
CEO Trevor Nisbett didn't even know what continent Cousins was on, assuming he was already in the United States for rehab.
Nisbett is being lauded for the way he has put in place protocols to change the club culture and chairman Dalton Gooding is being considered for an AFL Commission spot - despite both being in place during a time in which many regard the club as having a long-term drug culture.
It is getting to the point where it is easier to identify members of the entire state of WA who didn't warn the Eagles about player drug use than those who did.
The commission must draw a line in the sand to make a symbolic statement that enough is enough.
It need not be all the club's draft picks or million-dollar fines.
But in my view it is impossible to make the case that Carlton's salary cap rorting damaged the game more than the continued dramas the Eagles have subjected the AFL to this season.

No, it's newsworthy for the simple fact that the guy should be keeping his head down but he is as arrogant and contemptuous as cousins.....fonz_#15 wrote:barely newsworthy...some journalists would report anything

"AFL leaders tarnished by Cousins crisis
Caroline Wilson | October 21, 2007
THE flight home from France would have been a long one for AFL chief Andrew Demetriou as he contemplates the biggest crisis he has faced during his four years in football's top job. For the first time, Demetriou's authority has been truly tarnished.
The competition's new chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick, also faces a soul-searching flight home from commitments in London, during which time the former Carlton premiership captain will ask himself whether he, too, could have acted more swiftly and harshly upon West Coast and whether those actions could have prevented the current crisis. Fitzpatrick needs to show leadership.
The two league bosses must now decide how to deal with West Coast in this climate of tragedy and tawdry exposure and, it must be said, still some denial from the club itself. The AFL are caretakers of a game with a major dose of the dangerous drug problem that is hurting our society and a one-time hero who managed to scale football's greatest heights while apparently addicted to the methamphetine ice.
We pose the question that has been posed over and over again. How could the club have allowed this to happen without meaningful action until March this year? How guilty is the AFL of also burying its head in the sand, particularly given the fact it instigated an illegal drugs policy it didn't have to?
The drugs policy itself is not the problem, except that in the case of Ben Cousins, it is meaningless and irrelevant and in the case of the rest of the competition, clearly unreliable and far too random. The issues facing Demetriou and Fitzpatrick — who must now come to the forefront regarding the social crisis — have little to do with the drugs policy.
It has been a dreadful week for Trevor Nisbett, too, and a tragic month, but his public utterances on the Cousins situation have been far from convincing. Nisbett said on radio SEN on Thursday that as terrible as Cousins' lapse has proved for the player and his former club, the other problems at West Coast have been blown out of proportion.
Clearly, the Eagles' chief executive was exercising damage control but surely the crisis is too deep to worry about public relations. He commented on the fact that the club has been so intent upon fixing its culture and teaching its players how to improve their values that the off-field work at times had been to the detriment of the Eagles' on-field performance.
The embattled chief executive tried to make the leadership and behavioural exercise sound like a sacrifice. When you have the problems this club has, it is frankly insulting to even refer to the importance of a game of football. It was the club's determination to win a flag at all costs that led it to refuse to deal with Cousins and other endangered young men when it should have.
Cousins' tragedy continues to claim others. Dalton Gooding is gone from the Eagles and gone are his commission prospects. Meanwhile, those commissioners who wanted to punish West Coast in May to send a more powerful message than the lecture — "a nice old lecture", Nisbett glibly predicted — and the unofficial threats are angry now, but their anger should be tinged with regret. They, too, should be examining their leadership.
As should Demetriou. He was warned about the West Coast problem and his well-connected network must have kept him informed with the stories coming from the West.
What has hurt him in the eyes of other clubs is that Nisbett, Gooding and another long-time club powerbroker in Neale Hamilton are his friends. The accusation is that he should have been tougher, as he should have been with Collingwood's Alan Didak in June. This issue has tested him as it has everyone in the game who has touched it but he must act decisively.
To punish West Coast via the draft might not be the right answer, particularly given the AFL's compliance. There is also the troublesome matter of the Victorian club that we cannot name which may or may not have a drug problem. The players from that club may not have flaunted their dangerous social habits in the manner of the Eagles but West Coast would point to the fact that the problems at that club were legally covered up by the AFL.
This is Demetriou's biggest test and he appears well aware of the fact. It is why he has come home.

No doubt about that. Callers to talkback yesterday, people at work, chatting to people in they gym. Without fail the WCE supporters, and it's not hard to find ém over here, think their club's being victimised. Arrogance overload.
Yeah but this is not just any ol' male car lover..this is Daniel Kerr of the West Coast Eagles...and is he a car lover, or a lover of free grog in someone's corporate tent??? Cant see someone of his profile being out with the unwashed public.Lynch Beast wrote:how dare a young male car lover gets pissed on a Friday afternoon, in the off season

Kerr, take it or leave it, is paid a salary most of us can only dream about. Because of that, again take it or leave it, he is Daniel Kerr of the WCE 24/7. That goes triple just at the moment for obvious reasons.
If WCE management havent read the riot act to their players about behaving in public during this off-season of all off-seasons, then they need their heads read. Blind Freddy could work out that the tabloid media would be sniffing around anyone even vaguely related to the Club from now on..and its the aforememntioned management that have to front the pressers or write the statements if one of the players get into strife.
If the players have problems with that, maybe they need to have a chat to Benny Boy.

I WAS AT THE VERY RESTARAUNT HE WAS AT ON SATURDAY NIGHT. HE WAS WITH JUDD AND ANOTHER COUPLE OF PEOPLE AND WAS LEGLESS.
YES HE SHOULD ENJOY HIMSELF BUT WHEN WILL THEY LEARN AND WHEN WILL THE EAGLES GET IT.
AT ONE STAGE ABOUT 10 MINUTES AFTER KERR STAGGERED OFF INTO THE NIGHT A GUY CAME BACK AND MENTIONED SOMETHING TO JUDDY WHO SAID WHERE IS HE?? AND WALKED OFF IN DIRECTION KERR HAD GONE IN.
NOT A GOOD SCENE FOR BLOKE TO BE WANDERING AROUND DRUNK AS ALOT OF MUSCLE BOUND DRUNKS UP THERE LOOKING FOR TROUBLE.

I stand by what I posted last week - Daniel Kerr = PSD target.
I don't give a stuff if he's contracted to the West Coke Eagles until 2000 and friggin ten, he's GONE from that club.
Let's pick those damaged goods up one and by one.
Does anyone know if Gardy and Kerr are mates? If Gardy is still clean as it seems, perhaps if we got Kerr on board it would be all sweet.
Caro is on the money about Dimwit and how he's as soft as butter.
One wonders if you'd need a microscope to see his member!

One will not win us a flag. Either of the other 2 could. But that's not the point is it Plugger? If we're going to be consistent & get rid of "troublemakers" why would we want the 2 biggest troublemakers currently playing the game? Double standards. Reckon we can do it without Kerr & Cousins anyway. Just need the current batch of midfielders to pull their fingers out, they have the skill.
