NAB CUP Team

Post: # 476329Post Armoooo »

What do you guys think the Nab Cup Team should be, I would hope that we would be testing out our older players aswell as those returning from injury...
I would like to see this...
FB: R.Clarke Allen Dempster
HB: Goddard Maguire Geary
C: Gram Eddy Gilbert
HF: Schneider Riewoldt C.Jones
FF: Howard Koschitzke C.Gardiner
R: King Birss Armitage
I/C: M.Gardiner L.Fisher Baker Fiora
I don't think we should bother trying to bring the cup home, I think we should just see what our new recruits are capable of and how our rookies are developing....

Would like to see us actually make a challenge next year. It will help greatly with membership and morale going into the season if we at least win our first couple.

I think we should play the guys challenging for a spot as well as a rotation of senior players, rather than just rookies who won't be able to keep up.

Assuming that Brooks, Watts and McQualter won't be there next season...

B: Ferguson, Gilbert, L.Fisher
HB: R.Clarke, Maguire, Gwilt
C: Armitage, Dal Santo, Dempster
HF: C.Gardiner, Koschitzke, Schneider
F: Milne, Goddard, Allen

Foll: M.Gardiner, X.Clarke, Hayes
Int: Birss, Howard, Blake, King, Geary, Eddy

With all senior players given at least one game.

that backline might struggle to match up against a strong forward line. the nab cup means nothing to me, but i do think playing at real AFL venues, in front of crowds would help our young kids. put in sam fisher (or rance :D ) and maybe throw allen forward

Clarke, Gwilt and Ferguson before Gram? Please explain.

Good thread.

I'd like to see the following players play all the NAB cup games, players who are not (necessarily) in our best 22. But players who in all likelihood could be part of our finals team in 2008.

Armitage
Allen
Ball
Dempster
Ferguson
Gardiner
Gardiner
Geary
Howard
Goddard (wishful thinking, I think)
Kosi
Schneider
Pick #9

We will most likely get pumped if we play all of these players, but I care not. The NAB cup is the best time to analyse players for the future, and we need to make the most of the opportunity.

I would like to see the following used sparingly in the TAC Cup games, to play only one of the first three games.
Harvey
Hayes
Hudgson
Riewoldt
Dal Santo
S.Fisher.
They are all good players and we know what they can do.
Play the four we have just picked up and M.Gardner and Goddard who both need game time under belts, and all our draft picks and give the rookies at least one game each to strut their stuff.

It might be a little unfair to play these blokes against under 18's!! (TAC Cup).

IMO guys like gram, ball, harvey etc are walk up starts in our best 22.

I concur that we need to give gardy and gardy, king, ferg dempster etc a run to see their worth.

also we know schneider is quality and I think playing in the team will bolster his confidence with his new team mates.

By the same token, some guys will need to sit the NAB games out.

Harvey
Hudghton
Dal Santo
Gram
Fiora
Rix

Basically, the guys that we would be replacing with the younger guys.

Why would they NEED to sit those games out?

Playing the kids is a good idea, I agree, but there are some who will need the match practice to shake off the rust, especially the vets as they get older.

I'm all for chucking the kids in, maybe the practice matches are a better forum for that, though.

NAB games *ARE* practise matches. Of course you wouldn't have one guy sitting out the whole series, but you can't play a team with 4 ruckmen in it. IMO Gardiner + Van Rheenen would be good on that front. Also you need to have a general team balance, but I'd probably have a forward line setup that we'd be testing for use in the real season, as it's a huge change to lose Gehrig and gain C. Gardiner and Schneider.

I understand Harves and some others, but why did you think Rix might need a rest during the NAB Cup too?

B: Dempster Gwilt Geary
HB: RClarke Maguire Gilbert
C: Armitage Baker XClarke
HF: Schneider CGardiner Fiora
FF: Goddard Allen CJones
Foll: King Birss Eddy
Int: Van Rheenan Howard LFisher Ferguson McQualter MGardiner

Core players that are not playing, do not have anything to prove/fitness concerns to alay:
Riewoldt Dal Santo Hayes Hughton SFisher Montagna Harvey Gram Milne Koschitzke Ball

Fringe players who we know what they are capabilities are:
Blake Rix

If you progress throughout the NAB cup start introducing more "core" players & rotate them with underperforming rookies or first 22 players who have exhibited good form.

I'd prefer to have Gardiner and King as a ruck combo for the pre-season cup. Having never tapped a ball for the saints, they both need to learn to work with our midfielders. Rix would just be a waste of space with these two on the ground. Perhaps we can try him as a key defender though?

I agree whole-heartedly

After all the trouble with the FF take-over and what not, things are finally starting to look up and positive after a new fitness/conditioning team, a stellar trade period, I assume everyone here is just itching for the season to get underway, what greater way to generate more excitement around the "New StKilda"

i agree that most the boys dont have to prove their worth or fitness or anything but i reckon dal santo could do with some practise with being the key midfielder, sfisher would be best to have in the side, especially if Hudghton is being rested, montagna & gram both become key onballers, milney learns to play with Schneider but also has a run or two up the field - just to see where he is at

Also in the nab cup i would think lenny, koschitzke, riewoldt etc would be brought back however if we are knocked out into the challange cup then the young boys only - except for the last practise game
