FOR 41 years now Barry Breen has been famous for the solitary behind he kicked in the 1966 grand final, a point that secured St Kilda what remains its one and only league premiership. That fame is not about to change any time soon — but from now, his mates have another special moment of his life to remember him by. Not that Breen is proud of this one, mind you. Quite the contrary, in fact. You see, Sydney-based Breen is also quite an accomplished golfer — not only does he play off a handicap of eight but he recently was appointed captain of the prestigious NSW Golf Club. All of which amounted to nothing when Breen stepped up to the first tee in a stroke event at Portsea Golf Club last weekend. Playing in a group that included a couple of other broken down old footballers, former Carlton star Mark Maclure and former Hawk Mike Porter, Breen proceeded to play the worst hole of his life — a par four (and not a difficult one, either) that the Saints' 300-gamer, who turns 60 in January, turned into a disastrous 15 for the hole. "Yes, golf's a great leveller, don't worry about that," said Breen yesterday, confessing to his opening-hole calamity. "The trouble all happened in the bunker. I think I had about eight shots. It was steep and I just kept hitting the lip and the ball kept bouncing back in. But don't forget to mention I had a par on the next hole and even though I shot 97 for the round, next day at Sorrento I had a 74, so I'm not playing too badly, really." Maclure said he and his playing partners were amazed by Breen's horror hole. "We all just stood and watched and he just kept chopping away from the bunker," he said. "From that moment on, his shoulders were slumped, his head was down. And why wouldn't they be? His round was pretty much all over before he had even finished the first hole, poor bugger. But don't be too harsh on him. It happens to the best of us, even apparently the captain of the New South Wales Golf Club."
