My wife for Jennifer Hawkins (aka JennaHawk).
Schneider for #9.

Neither will get up.

Although if the former gets up, it'll make two. <how do I get a 'wink' smiley?>

fair to say that Ross Lyon would be having a fair bit of input into the worth of any trades involving Sydney players.

And rightfully so...

Get David Myers, Rioli or one of the top 5 mids that will inevitably drop down a few picks.

Grab one of the athletic key defenders with pick 26 (Tayte Pears, etc), trade the 3rd rounder for Ben McKinley and draft the best remaining ruckman with the 4th rounder.

Schneider and Buchanan, both are very adept at staging for free kicks, which they get wearing Sydney jumpers but probably would'nt in Saints jumpers. Forget them both. Keep No. 9 for a kid in the draft.

Unless Justin Sherman requests a trade I don't think we should give pick 9 away.

Would trade pick 26 for
Schneider
Buchanan
McMahon
Wood
Judd
Johnstone
Pettifer

Would trade a late draft pick for
King
Miller
McDonald

Schneider 17 FF, 21 FA
Buchanan 14 FF, 21 FA.
Compared to Riewoldt 45 FF, 10 FA!

Yeh.... Heaps of free kicks!
Our own skips a protected species!!! (As he should be)

Probably helps that Roo is a leading forward who spends most games out in front of his opponent. Get's his arms chopped at practically every contest. It is hard to give frees away when you're in front of your man!

Schenider is 23, and has played 98 games.
In 2007, he averaged 15 disposals, 5 marks and 1.3 goals per game. He polled 0 Brownlow votes.

Buchanan is 25 and has played 88 games.
In 2007, her averaged 18 disposals, 5 marks and 0.4 goals per game. He polled 5 Brownlow votes.

Both are good players ... Buchanan is better though.

I would straight away give up #26 for either, and possibly #9.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

I think we should keep pick 9.
But what if Sydney would take 9 & 26 for Buchanan AND Schneider.
Would we be happy with that deal.
(It'd probably never happen)

Disagree - Schenider is a match-winner already, Buchanan isn't quite there yet...

Schneider averages over a goal a game; Buchanan averages a goal every second game. I reckon the goals both of them kick are almost worth two goals - they're always on the run, and they kick team and crowd lifting goals, Schneider in particular.

Schneider's 23; Buchanan is 25. I'd say their age also reflects that Schneider can probably improve as a footballer, regardless of whether he stays or goes.

I feel Buchanan, to reach his potential, will need a change of scenery.

In spite of all that, if we can get either for a second round pick, it would be sensational...

And yes, I'd do 9 & 26 for both of them. They'd give our running power the biggest boost you could imagine. Dare I say it, but if we could get either Gardiner fit or bring in a decent ruckman....I'd be very quickly re-assessing our chances of success in 2008.

And I'm sure we could pick up a few late gems in the draft and rookie draft, too.

*Giddy at the thought of seeing goal-kicking midfielders in St Kilda jumpers*

Thank the Lord RL is coach and not some posters on this forum...

We would be barney bananas to trade either of our first two picks for anything other than an outstanding (read ridiculous) deal.

In the 95-97 period we kept our picks and ended up with Jones, Smith, Brown, Lappin et al.

In Timmy's reign we opted for recycled players and subsequently have a dearth of players around the age of 27.

Trade away your picks, trade away your future...

Take a look at the list Hawthorn are putting together and you'll get an indication of why giving away high picks for the likes of recycled hacks is mindless...

ST KILDA
General manager football development Tony Elshaug:
"It's a day to get a bit of an understanding about the requirements of each club. I think it's basically a lot of housekeeping and just making sure everyone is up to speed with who's on the list and who's off the list at this stage, what rookies have been promoted and what clubs are looking for."

On Lions ruckman Cameron Wood: "No [we won't be chasing him]. I think all the clubs are looking for ruckmen. I think if you've got one or two strong ruckmen at your club, you've got a better chance of being successful. That's been proven with [Brad] Ottens, [Brendon] Lade, [Steven] King and [Dean] Brogan. You need two strong ruckmen to win a premiership, so if you aren't looking down that road, you've got to have something else special going in your team. I think everyone is looking for that sort of player if they can, but they might not be there."

On Steven King: "If someone mentions his name and talks to us about him, we'll take it on board and go back and have a talk about it. [We're not worried about King's age as] we took Matthew Clarke last year at 34 years old."

It's fair enough if you give up sod all to get him. I don't mind a risk (e.g. down trading pick 40 to pick 45) but not at the expense of a kid.

Incorrect.

It's about balance.

McQualter, R Clarke, Ferguson, Howard and Armitage are some recent top 30 picks of ours.

Trading, if done correctly, isn't the scary beast people it is, and drafting isn't an exact science.

In fact, our recent recruiting has been highly questionable.

There's no hard and fast rule, unless you're rebuilding. My attitude is to be a frenzied hawk at trade week and investigate everything to see what the prices are. If you can cut an excellent deal, cut it. If you can't get at least 55-45 out of a deal, don't do it (unless being held to ransom by want-away player).

And if you can't cut the deal, so be it, you go to the draft.

I'm confident we can get him in a swap of picks.

King and 51 for 42 would go close.

End result = we lose some ground with our third round pick, but pick up a ruckman who's proven at AFL level, is desperate for another go, and has just had a really impressive VFL and AFL grand finals (couldn't have hoped for more from him, really). Age and injuries are against him, but it now seems clear that he's getting his body back on track.
