Fitness duo lifted work rate
01 October 2007 Herald Sun
Rebecca Williams
GEELONG assistant coach Brenton Sanderson has lauded the role of club fitness gurus Paul Haines and Dean Robinson in the team's premiership success.
The Cats' fitness issues last season were well documented, culminating in the sacking of fitness adviser Loris Bertolacci.
Geelong raided the Adelaide Crows and the NRL for its new fitness team of Haines and Robinson.
Haines, who had worked with Neil Craig at the Crows for years, became strength and conditioning manager.
Robinson, from NRL club Manly, was put in charge of rehabilitation and strength.
Sanderson said the pair had been pivotal in the club's success.
"Those guys were probably instrumental in turning the club's fitness and conditioning around," Sanderson said.
etc. etc.

Everything else that footy clubs do are a waste of time if you can't get your good players fit and available each week.

Though it started prior to their appointment with their new Club Doc in May of last year fresh from Europe who then went about progressively rebuilding Geelong's player conditioning group.bigcarl wrote:http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/ ... 42,00.html

To be a Premiership Team you actually have to get MANY things right...player conditioning is very important...but there are many important aspects that you need to get right.
The best teams get most things right....they are not perfect but they get most things right. They are sccessful ina broad range of areas.
Another of these is the players ability to want to succeed...you have to get their motivation and thinking right.
Who did this?? Bomber..well yes in part....buta HUGE factor was Ray Mclean.
Who is Ray McLean you may ask??

Praise for Ray McLean

You justhave to do it better than everyone else.
Some clubs moreso, becuase they don't get home games, have to travel more etc.
However, you can everything perfectly and be the best team by 20 goals - but if your players are injured, you're stuffed.
Everything else becomes irrelevant.

NO club does EVERYTHING better than ALL others clubs.

Pies fans would say that if Fraser wasn't injured they would have won - and probably have been premiers.
All clubs do pretty much everything the same, if not the same - very similar.
Too many players, coaches, assistant coaches, fitness guys etc. have been at several clubs.
The big difference between the top clubs and the bottom clubs is two things - their stage of development and their injury list.
The main difference between the top clubs, is luck.

Ah...now you are narrowing it to JUST the top clubsrodgerfox wrote:

Is that not an obvious statement that you can only be lucky if you are a top club??????
But what gets you to being a TOP CLUB.....not luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You get there by doing most things right.
You get there by doing most things better than other clubs.

Have another read of my post.
What I said, is that there are 2 differences between the top clubs and the bottom clubs.
Injuries, and their stage of development.
Then when you look at the top clubs (the ones with no injuries and peaking in their development), the difference between them is most often luck.
Geelong met Collingwood in a prelim without their number 1 ruck. Geelong's ruckman dominates and fall over the line.
They are now premiers. If not for an ounce of luck, they may have been merely prelim finalists.
Now look at Port. Second best team in the comp. Really? Several games including a final won by less than a kick. If not for an ounce of luck, they would have finished outside the top 4 and probably not even made the GF. Had Cousins not done his hammy during the game etc. etc.
Luck amongst the top teams is paramount. Check Sydney out. If anyone can tell me that Sydney are in the same class as any premier in the last 100 years they're lying.
They got lucky. Sure, the things they can control they did well - but without luck they wouldn't have had their noses in front of Geelong, us and West Coast.
If they had injuries, they wouldn't have even been in the top half of the ladder.

Agree with that 100%. We have had very little, if no luck in recent years. Actually seen an interesting quote in Tim Watsons book on Sheedy. An ex-player from the 70s - 80s (sorry cant remember who) commented in the book what a rotten run of luck Allan Jeans had with injuries at St Kilda, and how his luck changed when he went to Hawthorn.

Maybe if everyone stop talking about how we get picked on by the AFL, the injuries we get, the draw and so on we may have a bit more luck.Stephen Theodore wrote:rodgerfox wrote:

I actually dont think we get picked on by the AFL, or the draw is any worse than other teams (except Collingwood) but I do reckon our luck is down with injuries, especially Key Position Players.

In my mind you can only have bad luck with injuries when you have done everything in your power to ensure that injuries don't occur ... and then they still happen.
If you have the best fitness people available, enough resources devoted to recovery and proper training techniques, and you still get injuries, then it is bad luck.
But if you have 2 blokes working part-time from the back of an old tool shed trying to give everyone a rub down, then you can't complain when injuries occur.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

I believe that in the AFL right now there are more factors that contribute to success that our out of your control than are in it.
This is why it is no longer a sport that I'm overly passionate about.
It's not neccessarily that the AFL picks on us - it's that it's not in their best interest for us to have our own home ground.
It's not in their best interests for us to play at the MCG every week and not have to go to Perth.
It's not in their best interests for us to play finals at Docklands.
It's not in their best interest to have players coming off the ground bleeding.
It's not in their best interest to have Chirs Judd facing the tribunal for thuggery.
As for injury, there are plenty of things you can do to reduce the chance of it happening - however there is plenty that is out of your control too.
Having said that, there's no point whinging about injury - but it certainly is an excuse of reason for not performing at your optimin.
No team has ever won a flag whilst hit heavily with injury. The teams that win it, are the ones with their players fit and on the park. It's as simple as that.
The reason I talk about injury, is because I get sick of everyone disecting every aspect of what we're doing wrong compared to the premier, when the only real difference is our injury toll.
Rookies, the list, drafting, pace, ruckmen etc. etc. - sure we can improve in those areas, we can try to improve in every area - but that hasn't been the difference between us winning a flag. The sole reason is that we've never had close to our best on the park for more than a month over the past 4 years.
When we have, we've been unbeatable. When we have, the above furphy's suddenly aren't an issue.
