st Kilda up to our bad old recruiting tricks?
in hte early 90s we continually topped up or tried to top up instead of developing our own talent.
consequently we had a bunch of players who played 20 to 50 games for st kilda around the core of winmar, locket, loewe, grant, spud, etc, guys were brought in like willow, strooper, krakour, etc for a short term shot at success, something we again repeated in the late 90s with tony francis, monkey, delany, something we did in the 80s as well without success.
it seems we are going to be doing it again
last year gardiner, birss and clarke, the rumours are this year we are targetting f.ebola amongst other playres in the late 20s.
if true I wonder if it will work THIS time

still a loooong way to go til trade week
its the same s*** every damn year a rumor get put out ppl eaithe a go wild with exitement or b claim its the end of our clubs culture
for crying out loud do we really have to jump at every shaddow ??
do we really have to sweat on every signing ??
do we really have to drege up our past trade failings ?
the recruiting staff will know who they are targeting and as much as the media can speculate they are as blind to whats going to happen as we are
settle down take a deep breath and have some confidence that the club knows what its doing

Why look to the 90's Dan...?????
Why not look to the Great Dud Trades of 04/05 where we specialised in trading for players rejected by their AFL clubs as not good enough to play at AFL level?????
Besides it is only rumoured Dan... a bit like the 3rd Drug strike rumour...lets see what occurs before judging it

Well at a pinch, and not that I'd want it to happen, we just lost a FF capable of 60 to 100 goals a year. Lets just say for argument we were able to replace that player with someone of exactly the same capacity.
Fevola is a player very capable of kicking goals form outside fifty. Imagine our forward fifty Roo, kosi The Feb.
Fev is a very capable leading forward, if we could get his head right, perhaps this is one top up that might just be a winner. Depends on the trade but I can almost read a huge positive into it

I'm sorry, you've gone through all the trouble to find out what this actually says and it really is quite insignificant.

Read or listen to what Harvey had to say about his conversation with Lyon on list management.
Got the positions covered and will be looking to develop kids from the draft.
So what has changed in 24 hours?
Judd may well have been of some interest, but that is a matter of public record now - unfortunately.
So it is down to negotiating terms with Maguire and X.Clarke and trusting that they want to stay at St Kilda.
Then to the draft.
I continue to suggest there will be minimal movements on the list except for those imposed on us - and another couple of our mid-field types may not survive depending on the depth of the draft.
Now all we need to do is ensure we do not recruit the Australian cricket teams fitness guru!

Fev would be pretty handy contending with those pesky floods. Blast a few from 60 & keep them honest.
The pick 9 is ok for me...it's the pick 9 AND that is a little concerning.
If the mail re: Goose is right then we may still have a top 10 pick if we trade 9 away. Very sad if that happens...I'll need a new number of my jumper.

Re: st Kilda up to our bad old recruiting tricks?
Clarkes salary cost us two late picks in the draft...I'm afraid of what next as we need good kids coming through to continally develop...not everpaid average gap fillers...surely our history highlights the stupidity of this type of list management...we need rising stars for the future.saintsRrising wrote:While you canned Birrs continually...once he got fully fit at seasons end he seemed to go ok.Dan Warna wrote:

I think you seem to forget that your fallen idol is the guy who set the club backwards in his attempt at topping up/ drafing and trading for rejects from other clubs in his quest for a flag. We had the WORST ruck division in the league mainly due to our former coach's arrogance in not realising how important a cog a ruckman is to your premiership aspirations. RL more or less had to coerce M.Clarke out of retirement because our ruck stocks were just not up to AFL level. Blake is not a ruckman full stop, Rix is a battler at best and Brooks...................... lets not even go there.it seems we are going to be doing it again

In the wash up we got both Birss and Gardiner for pick 43 in the draft. Birss virtually came in to try and fill the void that Powell left, and Gardiner an AA ruckman. Well worth the punt for a 3rd round draft pick IMO

the thing is, of all the holes in our list... the forward line is the absolute least of our worries... we still have Riewoldt and Kosi and say Kosi is needed in the ruck, we currently have 2 potential replacements in Watts and Brooks who can be given a crack and some like Ferguson who can pinch hit.
The problems in our midfield should be the priority... we need 2-3 solid midfielders to come into this team in order to allow us to compete with the big boys.
We also need a key backman to start developing to replace Max or ease the load on him AND we need to draft one new ruck prospect and possibly recruit another stop gap if Gardiner doesn't come up... THESE ARE PRIORITIES

Well said Skeptic, midfield and backline need more bolstering than our forward line. Armitage, Allen, Geary and Eddy will have another pre-season in them so we need to access the next best from this years draft to develop with them.
Forget Fev, the price may be too much to pay in more ways than one.

The ironic thing is that the keepers of RB's flame are saying "give them time to get it right!"
Interesting. How long does one man need - and how many chances does he get? At stable, professional alternative offers fans two choices about which culture they choose to follow.
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

We should not be paying "over the odds" for either X or Goose. If they are asking for too much then fine put them on the trade table. X shows glimpses occasionly and then gets injured, and Goose is coming back from an horrific broken leg. I hope both stay and have great careers at the Saints, but if the club believe they are asking for too much then they could have considerable trade value.
