I had a feeling he might have, which is why I searched on Cricinfo... not a bad resume, played First Class cricket and 375 AFL games.

Looks like he made the right choice... only averaged about 17.

Must be something with old footballers being good cricketers - Harvs pretty handy himself.

Knowing Bally's cricket coach from his younger days, I've no doubt he would have played many games for Victoria had he pursued that path.

Also the famous SK Warne - who made his name in a few Ressies games for the Saints - managed to squeeze a few overs in somewhere along the way ...

Bradley actually played Sheffield Shield cricket as an opening batsman for South Australia before he transferred from Port Adelaide (where I think he played 99 games) to Carlton, as an established star of the game.

Given he made his Sheffield Shield debut as a teenager, opening the batting, his average of 17 ain't so bad. As with most who played at that level at that age, he was a technically very correct right hander, who could occupy the crease and graft his runs. So 17 usually took an hour or more to accumulate meaning he got to the first drinks break .

SA has a history of interstate footballers also having played interstate cricket, including the likes of Bob Hank, Lindsay Head, John Lill, John Halbert and they followed the likes of Gil Langley and George Giffen, who both played test cricket for Australia.

No doubt, if Bradley had concentrated on his cricket, his first class record would have been far better than it now reads.

has anyone mentioned keith miller yet? saint, state rep at AFL, flew bombers over germany in his spare time, demon fast bowler, and slashing batsmen who enjoyed putting bowlers to the sword and only the second australian to have his painting in lords after bradman.

Had the pleasure of meeting Keith Miller at Moorabbin when he was a guest of the (then) Board at a pre-game function.

An absolute pleasure to have had that opportunity to converse with an Australian legend - and the reason he is an Australian legend was obvious.

I was in the fortunate position of having relations who were very well known to him, hence the amount of time I spent with him that un-forgettable day - including sitting with him on the balcony during the game.

Don't ask me if St Kilda did the right thing by him and won though!

I think they did because Keith was in high spirits all day.

But any result paled in significance.

i reckon Id be too stunned to say anything to him if I did have the opportunity to meet him before he passed away.

as a cricket affecionado (cricket nerd ) his exploits, statistics, the victory tours etc are all material I've read and re-read.

his fast bowling after a few ales, turning up for first class games straight from a night on the town and demolishing opposition with demon fast bowling so he can have a lie down with his headache etc.

I reckon the brits used to make up heroes based on miller.

smash a dashing century in country cricket, drink all night with the boys, escort the ladies home, bomb berlin in the evening, scoot around in a sportster, and home for scones a tea before a rum game of football with the colonials!

seriously boys own adventure stuff! if you wanted to write fiction, just transcribe 40s and 50s keith miller.

Craig Bradley was a dour opening bat who played a few games for Victoria. I seem to remember that he may have even played a game for Australia A. I could be wrong !!

In regards Bradley's cricket career, he made his debut for SA as a teenager - and I can assure you that to play District Cricket as a teenager was an achievement, let alone Sheffield Shield cricket.

And it was at a time when there were some pretty good bowlers around the land - and life for a batsman was difficult, particularly if you were only 19 years of age.

He may have played one game for Victoria some years after his debut for SA - and after his move to Carlton.

It would be concievable that, if he had remained in SA, he would have played more rep. matches.

Miller, when he was a guest at St Kilda, was somewhat frail, had the effects of skin cancer which cost him some of an ear but remained the most engaging of people.

He did not speak to the function but was, obviously, acknowledged in an appropriate manner as the guest of honour - which he appreciated greatly.

I have in mind he said he had also played football for Victoria whilst at St Kilda.

But I hasten to add that he was most modest about his achievements.

To add another champion footballer who played Sheffield Shield cricket.

Barrie Robran.

Had one weakness in that he caused a couple of run outs along the way - well, that is my story and you never forget being run out I can assure you.

But the guy could bat a bit, as an opening batsman as well.

His brother, who also played footy at North Adelaide, could bowl a bit taking wickets in a pretty reasonable sub-district comp.
