i have my own forum (non football) which suffers from spam bot log ins
i now have these logins down to a couple a week instead of 100 a day

1) ban hotmail gmail and yahoo everyone should have a real account these days all you do is in the ban list type in *@hotmail etc the * meaning all accounts

2) i have national flags on my account and the bots always 99% of the time pick Afghanistan so they are easy to weed out of the members list i do this as soon as i notice them

3) They 99% of the time log in at -12hours which puts them in the middle of the ocean somewhere an easy code install wii fix this as well

Code: Select all

#
#-----[ OPEN ]------------------------------------------
#
includes/usercp_register.php

#
#-----[ FIND ]------------------------------------------
#

         if ( !($row = $db->sql_fetchrow($result)) )
         {
            message_die(GENERAL_ERROR, 'Could not obtain next user_id information', '', __LINE__, __FILE__, $sql);
         }
         $user_id = $row['total'] + 1;

#
#----[ AFTER, ADD ]------------------------------------------
#

         if( $user_timezone == '-12' )
         {
            die();
         }

#
#-----[ SAVE/CLOSE ALL FILES ]------------------------------------------
#
# EoM
my forum has 2500 real members and 1million hits per mnth and i manage the spam bot control on my own takes a few minutes per day

hope this helps

Quite frankly this will never work.

I use Hotmail specifically to manage my internet forum subscriptions and eBay, etc. I have a "real" (work) account, but I'd get the sack if they did an audit and found insecure and non related emails in my inbox.

If we banned free email address sign up, I'd have to leave the site, and I doubt I'd be alone.

simply have a confirmation code for registration and bang there goes 99% of bots in one go. It's not really that difficult to do.

The bots get around the comfirmation code 99% of the time

as for banning hotmail etc dont say this wont work because it does but its up to the individual forum owner and it makes no difference to those already signed up, doesnt affect them at all
.
I also have a very long banned list of emails etc and occasional lift the ban on say hotmail for 24hours to let someone join who specifically emails me that they cant join because for instance hotmail is banned

hope this helps

It's so hard to keep up with these critters...

75% of the time I log on just to delete what they 'post'.

It's pretty horrendous. Some of the stuff on the general forum yesterday was just abhorrent...

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
