Russell lTweedale and Don Discher were a couple of beauty's weren't they  But our reserves side wasn't half bad. A good year for us that year untill we played the Bumers and it all went pear shaped

You are probably right there. He certainly would have been better than Tweedale and Discher

Don Discher was a man mountain - a big, burly country cop. Huge bloke. Tweeddale was a could have been type!! Saw him take Francis Bourke to the cleaners at Moorabbin one day there - but alas, couldn't reproduce that type of form consistenly. Bit like Fehrings big kick - he could only ever do that the once - rest of the time he was a dreadful kick. That 78 team was just an awesome team - and needed a strong, determined admin to deal with the off-field hysterics that occurred around mid-season. They needed to stand by our team - in particular Big Carl and things could have ended up a lot better than they did. Beat both the eventual grand finalists on the run home - not just beat them either - smashed em'.

I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

Where are they now?

I'll start...

Gary McDonald retired at the end of the '78 season and went on to star as Norman Gunston and in TV's Mother and Son series.

Some fair players in the reserves team (maybe some were injured and not available) including Vic Rep Glen Elliot, Cat Colling, Sidey, Super Dupa and Pup Sarau.

Will always remember Gary Colling jumping the backyard fence to take Southmoor PS footy training a couple of times.
He was a GIANT, well I was only ten, and it was prior to '78
Great clubman, tried his heart out, epitomized the GOP tag.
Would hate to think of the basting he would cop on this board if he was playing today.

Butters Tickell Sidebottom

etc

I'll get my coat

The old zone system for recruiting was a good source of players back then.
I can count at least 12 players and a coach that I played with or against in the Ballarat league around that time.
