The lack of a premiership (in spite of mega bucks spent on football dept.) at Collingwood coupled with the sight of North Melbourne contesting a prelim this week (on the back of the worst facilities in the comp!) Bring into question the simplistic(?) arguments of Messrs. Westaway and Burke at "footy First" that more funds equals success.
Perhaps we have to look deeper and more honestly at the reasons for our (apparent) failures of late?
Funds for footy dept = success?

Top level facilities don't guarantee success, but they improve the chance of success, there is merit to SFF's argumentplumtire wrote:The lack of a premiership (in spite of mega bucks spent on football dept.) at Collingwood coupled with the sight of North Melbourne contesting a prelim this week (on the back of the worst facilities in the comp!) Interesting comments plumtire.
One could argue the money spent by Collingwood in football specifically recruiting has got them to a prelim as they have recruited some very good players with later round picks and rookie selections.
Who says they can't win the GF this year?
(Geelong are red hot but who knows, Pies are not out of contention just yet!)
Whilst they have Pendlebury and Thomas as front line top five picks they have not enjoyed the drafting bonus we have particularly as they were GF's in 2002 and 2003.
North is an interesting one, perhaps they were hamstrung but salary cap restriction (they were only paying 92% and now can pay 100%) but have certainly been the surprise package this year.

Never lose sight of the fact that when Collingwood finished on the bottom in Shaws last year as coach they had picks 1 and 3..
Pick 1 was used on Josh Fraser and pick 3 was traded for Steven McKee and pick 7 which was then used on a player that never played at AFL level
(Danny Roach). They've had decent draft picks before Thomas and Pendlebury, they've just wasted them..........
Thats one reason why we look like we've had the better of the draft.....

Season 2024 is where RTB is showing the footy world his grasp of the modern game.
