Trading our 1st round pick
Given that the Weagles will want two top ten picks for Judd, our pick 9 becomes a valuable commodity. In a year when the draft is not said to be a particularly strong one mightn't we consider trading our first round round draft pick to a club looking to get Judd.
(I don't believe that we can get Judd as we would not be able to fit him in under our salary cap)
Who would you take for pick 9?
A few suggestions from me......
Carlton
- they could then offer 3 and 9 + player for Judd
- we could take Fevola or Murphy (probably we'd need to give them another pick, or swap 2nd round picks too)
-can't see any other players we'd be interested in from them, perhaps offerer to have Ackland back to sweeten the loss of Fev for pick 9
Collingwood
- they would need to get hold of another top ten pick to trade for Judd
- we could take Leon Davis
Essendon
- they could then trade picks 6 and 9 + player for Judd
-we could take Lovatt
Melbourne
- they could then trade picks 4 and 9 + player for Judd
- we could take Sylvia or Nathan Jones or Brad Green
Richmond
- they could then trade picks 2 and 9 + player for Judd
- we could take Nathan Foley

Never trade a first round pick unless the deal is heavily in your favour.
Let's face it ... trades are minimal these days, and generally involve GOP's (Birss, Solomon) or players with personal issues (Gardiner, Tarrant).
Judd is the first "big name" to be traded due to his own desires since Nathan Brown went to the Tigers.
You are looking at a potential Montagna, Dal Santo or Hayes with your first round pick. To give up that opportunity is a significant risk, and a risk that very few clubs take these days.
The successful clubs at the moment are the ones who have held on to their first round draft picks.
When was the last time West Coast, Port Adelaide or Collingwood traded away a first round pick?
To be successful over the long-term, you have to develop your own players and to do that you need to use the draft.

They should only play AFL games now when it's raining. Slow games of footy are so much better to watch.

Well Sydney gave up a 1st rounder for Jolly (paid off for them a premiership)
Geelong gave up a 2 1st rounders for Ottens look at them this year!
I would be very very very very surprised if WestCoast didn't get two 1 st rnder's for Judd.
Yes they are like gold nowdays so you have to be very carefull with your 1st rounders but they are tradable.

Why would the other team involved do that trade then? You gotta give up something to get something in return. Pick 9 could be an absolute superstar, but it could also produce an absolute dud who doesn't play a game.evertonfc wrote:Exactly.Oh When the Saints wrote:Never trade a first round pick unless the deal is heavily in your favour.

If the other team is in a rebuilding phase and wants to stock up on young kids.
We arent in that kind of slump at the moment, we need some holes filled.
Usually i would say dont trade pick 9, but if the right trade came up - something that was a positive move for US - then yes, id definitely think about it.
How old is Prismall?

prismall is 21 this year only managed 5 matches this year and 8 last year, IMO he is as big if not bigger risk than a draftee.

Yep. Basically any of Richmond/Carlton/Essendon need a late top ten pick to be able to get Judd. This means that they will need to trade with one of....True Blue Sainter wrote:Why would the other team involved do that trade then? You gotta give up something to get something in return. - Brisbane for pick 8
- Saints for pick 9
- Adelaide for pick 10
or at a pinch......
- Sydney for pick 11
- Hawthorn for pick 12

There is bound to be a price war over Judd, and we might be able to extract an extremely attractive offer for our premium commodity: PICK 9.
Imagine if we could get a good ruckman or a running midfielder/attacker in their early 20s for our pick. Wouldn't that be worth it? An established goog player instead of an unproven talent?

I agree with you there Richter, but the player would have to be very good.
Of the players you mentioned above, I wouldn't touch Davis, Lovett, Green or Sylvia, all for different reasons.

I think Sylvia could be a good acquisition OWTS, if we get their 3rd rounder in return as well! Quick, hard at it, strong overhead and can kick a few goals! And about 21! I remember when that bloke who does all the potential draftee profiles described him as the next "Mark Ricciuto", although he is a fair bit quicker than Mark... would love him down here! Pretty sure he was a Sainter as a kid as well!Oh When the Saints wrote:I agree with you there Richter, but the player would have to be very good.

At least he went home when the night was turning into morning...unlike our mate Alan... who coincidentally played a blinder on Friday!!Oh When the Saints wrote:Shocking bloke though. Was with Didak on that infamous night, and a few other stories as well.
I have also heard some less than encouraging (to be nice) reports about Sylvia and his lifestyle outside of footy... I actually ran into him at Cheers one Tuesday he was there with Lynden Dunn and another youngster (I think Newton?) over last summer, and look, he was fairly intoxicated to say the least, but he wasn't putting himself into any dangerous situations, and was just enjoying himself with a couple of good mates. That's my personal experience with Colin!

Re: Trading our 1st round pick
can't see us giving up pick 9 for Davis, probably the only two realistic options from Collingwood are Fraser and Didak.Richter wrote:

SOmething like Didak to Saints for pick 9
Pick 9 & Fraser to Blues for pick 3.
Pick 3 and Pick 13 to Weagles for Judd

Think the pies will move heaven and earth to get Judd and that is where there is players to be had, Collingwood. They will need to secure two top 10 picks or one high one and give away a top line player ImO.
Puts Adelaide in the box seat to secure Didak for pick 10 I would imagine, who would the Pies consider untouchable? Pendlebury, Cloke and Thomas are the ones that spring to mind. I would consider trading pick 9 to Collingwood for their first pick and one of OBrien, Maxwell or Goldsack.

Maybe this year?
