Only 3 out of the top 8 sides had a player who kicked 50+ goals for the season.

None of the Eagles, Kangaroos, Collingwood, Adelaide or Sydney had a player who kicked 50 for the year ...

All teams had players who kicked over 40 goals, so fifty is a bit of an arbitrary number.

But it's interesting - I reckon it proves that you need multiple forward options to win matches, and that forwardlines with MANY options are actually more successful.

The one-man or two-man forward-lines don't work effectively.


I loved Frase and will miss him greatly, but hopefully our forwardline becomes a bit more flexible in his absence.

The versatility of Riewoldt and Koschitzke will allow us to be less predictable and share the load a bit more in the F50.


Geelong had 7 players kick 20+ goals
Port Adelaide had 6 players kick 20+ goals
West Coast had 6 players kick 20+ goals

St Kilda had 4 players kick 20+ goals.


If we can find more options up forward and spread the load around a bit, we will be less predictable and hopefully win more football games.

- Duck 64 goals
- Longmire 75 goals
- Fridge Roberts 47 goals
- McAdam 68 goals

They finished 3rd, only 2 points behind 1st and 2nd.
They had the best percentage.
But under the cruel final 6 system they played a no double chance elimination final against West Coast - eliminated.

i made this point back in april or may, i think, in a thread called "i've had a gutful of the kick it to roo gameplan"

i pointed out that when we looked unbeatable in early 2004 we didn't rely on riewoldt alone to carry the forward line

fraser was a major contributer of course but milne and guerra were kicking bags and kosi and hamill were contributing often. midfielders were also backing themselves to take a ping more often rather than invariably looking for roo and fraser.

our forward coaching is a major concern imo

legendary coach john kennedy senior once said he used to play his best players up forward because the team that kicks the most goals wins football matches

i'd set it up something like this:

HF: gilbert, riewoldt, goddard
F: milne, kosi, dal (or other resting midfielder)

would give us multiple marking and crumbing options and all reasonable kicks for goal

but game plans being what they are (overrated imo) most of them would have to provide "numbers behind the ball" or whatever the current fad is.

Because the instinct of every St Kilda midfielder was to find Gehrig when they had the ball ... they were trained to do it for 5 years and it became second nature.

Gehrig, for all his brilliant games, was a one-grab player. He offered little forward pressure and if he didn't mark on the lead, his opponent often ran off and won the contest.

Without Gehrig, the Saints mids will be forced to lift their eyes more and look for other options up forward.

This will allow us to rotate Rooey, Kosi, BJ, Watts, X and hopefully Gardiner through full-forward giving us different options and making us less predictable.

All those other players offer different strengths, and are better at making the contest than G was.

Therefore I believe we will be more flexible.
