Re: Matthew Kennedy
Scollop, you say that Macrae partnered with Bailey Smith could work well together for St Kilda, which is counter to your previous assertion that Macrae is too slow and well past his prime to be effective in the midfield. How exactly do you think that would be accomplished, any more than Macrae partnering with any of the current St Kilda midfielders?Scollop wrote: ↑Tue 08 Oct 2024 7:44pmBUMP.SinCitySainter wrote: ↑Tue 24 Sep 2024 2:33pm
Saints are not close to a flag with the current list.
Unfortunately, adding a 30 year-old Macrae and Ivan Soldo does not change that either.
Unless we are willing to trade out our first-round pick or picks for proven, mid-age A graders, say Bailey Smith for example we will not get there before Steele, Wilkie, Sinclair etc... are on the decline.
The choice is simple, go hard for a flag now which means trade in 25-27 year old A graders and ignore the draft.
Bumping this thread, but I'm not doing it to discuss Kennedy. More a big picture discussion regarding going hard for a flag now
I'm against the strategy and I'd prefer we bring in 2 quality mids with our two first round picks...BUT
I reckon if...and this is a BIG IF.. if Geelong do not get a deal done during Trade week for Bailey Smith, he is not under contract, so that means we potentially could pick up him up with our first pick in the National Draft.
If we're getting Mcrae for a third round pick, and we're also getting Soldo, then doesn't it make sense to try and bring in Smith? Mcrae and Smith might actually work well together and settle in to St Kilda better than just one of them coming across...that makes me think...have we also tried to get Caleb Daniel? Why not go the combo deal
Speaking of deals. Geelong want to offer the Bulldogs pick 17 for Bailey Smith. We have a much much better 1st round pick to offer the Dogs.
If we are serious about winning a flag now then we should be talking to Smith's manager.
I also take issue with your comments at 9.12 pm last night suggesting that Ross Lyon is once again desperate to fast track a premiership by "going hard for a flag now":
"2 or 3 years into Freo's rebuild ...and before they were ready as a team to challenge for finals, Lyon was desperate to make finals. Over a 12 month period (trade periods 2017/18) they brought in Brandon Matera, Nathan Wilson, Reece Conca, Trav Collyer, Jesese Hogan and Rory Lobb."
Right now there have only been two experienced players that we know of who could end up at Moorabbin next year:
1. Jackson Macrae - who in reality is simply a replacement for Brad Crouch, and in my view an upgrade on the latter, which is a plus.
2. Ivan Soldo - in effect a replacement for Tom Campbell, and also an upgrade given he is only 28.
That's hardly a repeat of what happened at Fremantle, wouldn't you agree?
I know you've said you're not a Lyon hater, but you certainly make it patently obvious in your posts that you don't have any faith in his judgements as head coach.
My thoughts on Lyon's second crack at trying to guide St Kilda to a second premiership is that under club president Andrew Bassat Lyon is most certainly not given carte blanch solo control to act in any way that might distract from the board's firm commitment that the club will not be taking any short cuts to reach their ultimate objective.

Re: Matthew Kennedy
Saying that, I don't have ANY faith in his judgements is wrong. I reckon even blokes as stubborn as Lyon learn and grow. I think he's a better coach now than he was either at Freo...and especially since his first senior gig.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Wed 09 Oct 2024 1:34pm

My acceptance regarding the Mcrae and Soldo moves had me thinking of trading options...
After all it is trade week isn't?
